I thought the book would include a vision for the reformation of the sacrament of confession, but it was very brief on that point. Otherwise it was entertaining and full of fascinating facts concerning church history. It is at times unbelievable to ponder the lengths of legalism the Western Catholic Church has gone during some periods of history.
The history of confession has always been one of multiple changes to the simple element of forgiving. The author did make it interesting . As a cradle Catholic I did enjoy the book and reading about some of the " peculiar " habits of some of our saints. Good reading and I suggest picking it up
I call it THE PORN BOX.Long before the Internet and easy access to porn, these Roman Catholic priests had verbal porn on tap! From children as young as 8 to old people of 98, these perverts had a special book, which taught them how to investigate their penitents sinful lives and getting their "jollies off" in the mean time.THE BEAUTIFUL HANDS OF THE PRIESTWe need them in life's early morning,We need them again at its close; We feel their warm clasp of true friendship,We seek them when tasting life's woes.At the altar each day we behold them,And the hands of a king on his throneAre not equal to them in their greatness;Their dignity stands all alone; And when we are tempted and wander,To pathways of shame and of sin,It's the hand of a priest that will absolve us--Not once, but again and again. And when we are taking life's partner,Other hands may prepare us a feast,But the hand that will bless and unite us--Is the beautiful hand of a priest.God bless them and keep them all holy,For the Host which their fingers caress; When can a poor sinner do better,Than to ask Him to guide thee and bless? When the hour of death comes upon us,May our courage and strength be increased,By seeing raised over us in blessing--The beautiful hands of a priest.ALTER CHRISTUS"The priest is indeed another Christ, or in some way he is himself a continuation of Christ."(Pope Pius XI, Encyclical on the Priesthood).“What did the Paedophile Roman Catholic Priest say to the Altar boy, as he buggered him in the Sacristyâ€?“Body of Christâ€!
Useful identification of when the confessional box originated (after the Council of Trent during the 1560s) and why. But misrepresentative of confession practice in a number of other ways. In particular, the implication that child sexual abuse increased in the church when the age of first confession was lowered to 7 (in the early 20th century) did not seem borne out by the text, and the implication that the confessional box was dark and somehow contributed to sexual promiscuity seemed the exact opposite of what happened. If anything, the liberalisation of confessional practice after Vatican II where the confessional box is not required has led to more promiscuity. The box is probably a good preventive mechanism as it was designed to be. I also felt that the author's own experience as an abused youth prejudiced the overall treatment.
Cornwell has written with such integrity all his life. But the thinking and conclusions in this book would if undone would bring many back to the Church. This book clarified so much for me, both as a Catholic kid and a Catholic nun in my early years. Read it if you were brought up Catholic.
In antiquité thé Father, St John Chrysostom, according to Quasten, frequently called on the people to seek forgiveness by partaking in the Eucharist. There is no trace to suggest that he was aware of one on one, in private, with a priest, outside of Mass, for the ordinary Christian to regularly seek absolution for daily transgressions. In monasteries and other religious houses there developed what was called "chapter" where the community would gather at various intervals to hear self accusation as a spiritual exercise. That might have been what gradually leaked out into the general community. Anyone from the first millennium would be puzzled by the little closets that are in churches today.
exceelent and stimulating
Author identifies both positive and negative elements in the current administration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Anyone teaching Sacramental Theology should read the book.
