I don't know that I have to patience to wait for the next book!

Ten years is a long time to live with regrets, to wonder if the choice made was the right one and a very long time to live with a broken heart. Ava made a decision back in high school to let the young man she loved with everything she had to give go free to experience life without her. Jack’s life had never been easy. He’d had to watch his younger brothers endure the mental and physical abuse of their alcoholic father. That’s not to say that Jack didn’t suffer as well, but in his mind, as the oldest, it was his job to protect them… and he couldn’t. The brothers had been rescued by their aunt, their father no longer had control of the ranch or them and finally, Jack could plan the future he wanted as a lawyer. The first step on his journey was leaving home and Ava. She let him walk away without one vital piece of information… he was leaving behind more than bad memories and her, he was leaving a bit of himself behind as well.He didn’t want to be here. His one consolation was knowing the old man was rotting in the ground. Still, the memories remained. His plan had been to sweep in, get it done and get gone but that wasn’t working out quite as intended. The ranch he was fine with, it was his newly inherited vineyard that was the problem and he’d need help there. Help from the one woman he never stopped loving and the one woman he hadn’t been able to stay for so long ago. Now he’s facing memories, and the discovery of a son he never knew about. Ava had kept that fact from him when he’d left the ranch years ago, and maybe she’d been right to, it’s hard to know for sure now. Life just got complicated and just maybe life had given him a second chance to get it right with the woman he’d always love.SECOND CHANCE COWBOY grabbed my attention early on and never let go. In fact, my heart broke for almost all of the people we encounter in this story (with one obvious exception). Choices made that seemed right at the time now come under some deeper thinking but it’s impossible to change the past. I loved Ava and Owen, enjoyed the brothers yet Jack was a puzzle to me. I never really got a good feel for this man as, even now, his emotions are still all over the place. Watching Jack and Ava rekindle their love, seeing Jack’s reaction to his son as he learns a new role in life was emotional and tugged at my heart. I enjoyed this first look at the Crossroads Ranch series, and I’m definitely looking forward to learning more about so many characters. This isn’t an easy family, there are memories, events, and decisions that left a lot of emotional turmoil in their lives. Seeing how it all turns out for them will be an enjoyable journey. If you love a good romance, a complicated relationship, some angst and a couple that belongs together then you’d enjoy this one.I own a Kindle edition of this title.

Swoony Second Chance Romance!This was my first book by A.J.Pine and I absolutely loved it! Jackkkk Everett ! Boy, was I smitten with that man. His story pulled on my heartstrings. Son of a drunk, and a reputation for being the town low life. He knew returning home for his fathers funeral wasn't going to be easy, and would bring back haunting memories from his past. What he didn't except was to cross paths with high school sweetheart and love of his life, Ava Ellis.I found Ava's character to be genuine and beautiful. I had so much love and admiration for her. She loved Jack with her whole heart and it truly showed in her selfless actions throughout the book. I also adored little Owen! His young, carefree character was very loveable. I just ate up his little mannerism's that were identical to Jacks. Too cute.The author did an amazing job pulling me into this sweet second chance romance and I can't wait to read Walker's story.

I'm already a fan of Pine's "Kingston Ale House" series, and Book 1 of her new series doesn't disappoint! If you think the "Kingston" couples had issues, wait until you get a load of the demons bedeviling the Everett brothers (and deservedly so). Foul-mouthed and all as sexy as heck, I couldn't help but laugh at their banter. Ava is as sweet and selfless as can be, but even she can only take so much from the wounded boy she once sent away. Jack is too afraid to grasp the HEA within his reach. Looking forward to up-and-coming rodeo star Luke and newly-divorced Lily's story in "Tough Luck Cowboy," and I bet Walker's story will be a REAL doozy. PS: Great name for the dog ...

Held my attention during some chapters but others were disappointing. The writer gave away too much information too soon so there was very little suspense to hold attention.

Loved this one. It's a great way to start a new series because now I'm completely hooked! Jack and Eva's story is a fantastic second chance story and Owen is such a cute kid. Can't wait for Walker and Luke's stories. I highly recommend this one.

Really enjoyed this book. Characters seemed like everyday people dealing with everyday issues. Love was apparent throughout the book. Ending with love and forgiving . Very enjoyable read. Ready to read more.

Good book! New author for me. She kept me engaged from the first page until the end. I will recommend her!

Not giving this short look at AIDS in Africa (and specifically, the experience in Nigeria, the author's home country) more than three stars feels a bit churlish. But however moving the individual stories it contains may be, the book itself is far from flawless.My principal problem with the narrative surfaced early on, when Iweala makes the case that the West has a difficulty in understanding Africa's AIDS crisis because we are blinkered by ages-old prejudices. Certainly, those prejudices exist, especially among those who have never spent any time in sub-Saharan Africa. But Iweala then proceeds to undermine his own case by showing that many of these preconceptions may have some basis in reality. For instance, he discusses the nature of sexual relationships as being more likely to be concurrent than consecutive (he talks to a man who defines fidelity to a girlfriend as cutting the number of his other girlfriends from eight down to four, and then only to one other woman, for instance.) Forget labels and judgments: as Iweala and the physicians he talks to for this book comment, that kind of approach is more likely to result in the kind of dramatic spread of AIDS that the world has witnessed in Africa. He doesn't want traditional African beliefs criticized -- and yet some of those, too, have negatively affected the lives of Nigerians with AIDS, as they are excluded from the community and shunned our of a kind of fear that AIDS is spread via some kind of miasma.Where does the line lie between the West patronizing Africans by offering assistance and offending them by not doing enough? Iweala refers to African HIV/AIDS activists and their belief that Westerners don't see African AIDS patients "as similar to ourselves and thus deserving of proper medical care." What popped into my mind at that point was the number of Americans I've encountered who view their fellow Americans (of any color) in a similar way: anyone imprudent enough not to provide for health emergencies isn't their responsibility, I've heard it argued. This is a human issue, not simply a West/Africa issue, sadly, although in the case of Africa it may be complicated by history. Still, it isn't specific to Africa; similar perceptions have taken root in Asia at times.I didn't expect Iweala to provide answers to any of these very difficult questions that lie at the heart of the relationship between Africa and the West -- but given that he raised them, I was disappointed he adopted what struck me as a narrower view. Had the core narrative been stronger, these issues wouldn't have niggled at the back of my mind as they did. Are the portraits of the Nigerians who are battling the disease moving and compelling? Absolutely. Are the tales inspiring. Certainly. Is Iweala's core message -- that we should see each other, positive or negative, African or Western, as humans first and foremost -- important? Without question. Of course we must work to cross these boundaries. But I wonder whether the people who will read this book and respond to that message have already accepted this? How many North Americans and Europeans -- those who are willing to listen -- are going to find that at all revelatory or fresh? Perhaps it's true, however, that some of those observations that I found to be self-evident -- that we all should help those struggling with HIV to simply lead their lives -- are those that bear the most repetition.What this book does do well is to provide readers with a compelling oral history of AIDS in Nigeria. The portraits of the individuals Iweala encounters are vivid and he does a great job of blending their stories with the necessary facts and figures. Nonetheless, Still, this book didn't accomplish nearly what it could have. By brushing away the difficult questions -- dismissing a CNN story of a town of AIDS orphaned children in Kenya as melodramatic (fair comment) and as being about Kenya and thus irrelevant because Africa is more than just Kenya (well, Kenya is a part of Africa... and the village did exist...) -- Iweala undermined some of what he otherwise accomplished in my eyes.This probably won't be a majority view, and that's probably just as well, as this is certainly a powerfully human book that deserves readers. Nonetheless, I remain underwhelmed.

I lost my best friend to AIDS in 1989, and I still miss him terribly. For years I was terrified of making friends with gay men for fear of losing them. I had lost three friends, and until the anti-retro viral treatments were available, I was worried all the time that other friends would be taken from me. After the cocktail that worked was readily available, my fears dissipated and now I have two friends with HIV/Aids who happily live their lives fully, without the fear (on their part or mine) that they will die a premature death. I've seen the fear it inspires, first hand, how some family members react and how miserable self-righteous prigs see this disease as a punishment from God. But, that was a generation ago. To read a book written today, that details all the crap people had to go thru who had HIV/Aids thirty years ago, as if it were breaking news, is mind numbing. I have known about the devastation HIV/Aids has caused to millions of people in different countries in Africa for almost as long as I knew about it here.Iweala wrote this book as if it's a relatively new phenomena that needs to be addressed. C'mon. Wake up. This is not new or news. What is important is how millions of people in Africa are denied treatments because of either cost or inaccessibility to locations that administer treatments (the latter situation wasn't even addressed in this book).There are snippets in this book that are compelling, but mostly it is dated material, poorly and very defensively written. Iweala constantly bemoans how we clump all the people and all the countries in Africa together and make grotesque generalizations. Make that point and move on.I did, however, love the title of the book. Essentially, it asks, who gets HIV/Aids. And the answer is: People like us. Viewing the crisis that way keeps us from treating those people who are positive as "the other".

A real eye opener for the novice when it comes the the real American political system. Mr. Reagans' was out for himself, no matter whose he had to stab in the back. He informed on his fellow actors who he called called Communists, knowing of course that domestic Communism posed no threat to American security, and that any fils written for "red purposes", would final many screenplay excerpts being penciled out. He was a servant of Mammon way back then, as well as Governor of California, and President of the United States. Yet, among many blue collar folks he is considered a hero-YIKES ! 5 Stars

when i was very young i worked in a support capacity for several of the key figures who had been involved in handling mr. reagan's career while he was a client of mca. (i respected these gentlemen, incidentally. compared to most of today's crowd they were professional, courteous, and had class). while i do not have inside information confirming anything that dan moldea has written here, he seems to have a good feel for the way things worked in hollywood. reagan almost certainly rose up in the world thanks to cronyism and sleazy deals-- especially the mca waiver, which dan covers well (as does lou cannon in his more famous book). maybe that doesn't exactly make our dear Ronnie a gangster, but it smells bad enough that it should stink up the man's reputation for as long as justice still has one good eye, as Joni Mitchell put it.

Another bitter dose of truth to swallow not onlyfor the conservative Reagan supporter, but also for any American that lived during the time of the Reagan administration's polices.It allows the reader to understand why Reagan made the policy decisions he made at the time.Policy decisions which set in motion some of the economic damage that the country now faces.

Very well researched and a fascinating read for anyone interested in how back room Hollywood maneuvering propelled Reagan from a small time actor to all the way to the White House.

Dark Victory: Ronald Reagan, MCA, and the MobDan. E. Moldea has specialized in investigating organized crime, and has written for many publications. This book is about Ronald Reagan and his relationship to MCA, the powerful entertainment conglomerate. Show business, Hollywood and TV, play an important role in adjusting the thinking, wants, and buying habits of the public. They have more effect on people's lives than many churches. There are questions and allegations about Reagan and MCA. Are there links to organized crime (p.2)? MCA owns the largest motion picture and television production companies in the United States, and other businesses (p.3). In the 1940s Hollywood shifted its attention away from organized crime to the Communist menace (p.5). President Kennedy's term saw an investigation of anti-trust violations; it was settled out of court (p.6). MCA's executives made Reagan a multi-millionaire overnight, before he was made Governor. Reagan appointed "known associates of organized crime" to his campaign staff and later to positions in the Reagan administration. [This book must have been written before the drug smuggling and money laundering operations known as "Contragate" became public knowledge.]Chapter 1 has the history of MCA and how it developed with the spread of radio and records, entertainment for the masses. Chapter 2 tells how organized crime developed in Chicago, moved into legal businesses and bought political protection. [No mention of strike-breaking or business rivalries.] They then moved into Hollywood and its cash-rich businesses. Will Hays hired gangsters to break unions (p.26). Payoffs to the union officers saved many millions in wages and benefits (p.27). Chapter 4 tells how the studios used union bosses to keep wages low and control their workers (p.37). The next chapters tell of anti-trust suits against MCA, and its business with competitors. It tells how big business and the Federal government acted for mob-controlled unions. The anti-trust ruling in the Paramount case allowed banks and others to finance motion pictures (p.80). The removal of Communists from Hollywood was followed by the increased involvement of organized crime (Chapter 11). The Kefauver Committee investigated organized crime (Chapter 12). They did not call Korshak (p.91). The Mafia was too powerful for Kefauver (p.92). Chapter 15 tells of Senator Barry Goldwater's friends (pp.118-119).Chapter 21 explains MCA's monopoly: a "blanket waiver". The Anti-Trust Division said this was a conspiracy between MCA and SAG (p.166). Chapter 23 has Ronald Reagan's grand jury testimony from Feb. 1962. His memory was "hazy on a great many things" (p.183). Reagan didn't want to over-expose himself, and would not do commercials (p.188)! One of Reagan's concerns was a pension plan for himself (p.194). Moldea explains 11-22-1963 on page 234. Reagan made a commercial for Goldwater (p.235). After this he was picked for governor (p.238). Was the sale of Reagan's ranch too good to be true (pp.240-241)? The remaining chapters cover the later career of Ronald Reagan, the business of MCA, and their symbiotic relationship. Reagan's link to MCA brought him wealth and fame. The `Epilogue' tells how Ronald Reagan tried to give away the publicly owned airwaves; "no antitrust problems" (p.307). Should the tried and proven anti-trust laws be junked because of "new economic realities" (p.313)? Should failure be rewarded? MCA's conflict with James Garner is on page 314. This section also tells about Lew Wasserman and Sidney Korshak. President Reagan cutback on the FBI's crime fighting and on other Federal investigations (p.319). Next he reduced funds to state and local authorities (p.320). Was Reagan a "fraud" (p.321)? The quiet scandals are listed here (p.324).This book is very informative but sort of drags in parts due to its length.
