We were very much looking forward to add this to our Olivia library - but are quite disappointed.This book offers poor choices for counting and A LOT of the drawings are taken from other Olivia books. Besides a great cover, there is hardly new content in here (only the 4 aunts and 8 cousins). The re-use of images feels random and it misses all the wit other Olivia books have.Here are the things to count:1 - Ball (image taken from "Olivia" - when Olivia is on the Beach.)2 - Bows3 - Cans of paint (showing the cans from "Olivia" - when Olivia paints the wall.)4 - Aunts5 - Books (image from "Olivia" - when Olivia wants to read 5 books for bedtime.)6 - Teeth (image from "Olivia" - when Olivia scares Ian away, wearing a paper bag with a scary face)7 - Accessories ???!! (to me a shirt is really a piece of clothing and not an accessory..)it feels like "7 random items"8 - cousins9 - toys (there are multiple balls in here, plus a baseball and bat.. which counts as two items.. )10 - Olivia's (also images from "Olivia")We love Olivia but this book really disappoints and it seems like the publisher is just "milking the cash-cow".I would skip this book. Unless you like to hear your toddler try to read out the word "accessories".

A perfectly adorable book for those tiny little ones we love so much. The thickness of the board book makes them more durable, but it introduces young children to the ways of handing a book properly. This book is great for learning numbers, words, and amounts to 10.

Also for the great granddaughter.

Disappointing--no plot, no story, just illustrations with number. It isn't what I thought I would be getting, which, I guess, is my own fault. I love the other Olivia books and when I saw this, I bought it without checking it out first. I won't make that mistake again!

This book is just a compilation of pictures lifted from the other better Olivia books. It doesn't really tell a story or make the counting fun or interesting in any way. It misses the spirit of Olivia and seems like a half hearted cash grab, a definite low point on the Olivia franchise. You can have more fun counting things in the other Olivia books while reading a story.

Grandchild's mother suggested this title. It has cute Olivia illustrations by the author and it may help the child develop understanding of quantities.

This was the perfect book for my little granddaughter who just turned one! Since it's a board book, the pages are easy to turn. So when her mom handed it to her she sat there in the chair looking at it, and turning the pages, by herself! It was so cute! It is a simple counting book - 1 Olivia, 2 Olivias, 3 Olivias, etc. - they're all doing something different. It's very cute and this was a great price for this book!

If you like the Olivia series of books and you are looking for some fun pictures for the kids to learn counting, this is a good one.It's short and sweet. I would prefer to have bought it used. The original Olivia book is the best one, simply entitled "Olivia".

An incredible resource and treatment of a decisive issue in the church and in the world.One of many profound insights to share a taste:-"The dramatic movement of lament is both spiritually pedagogical and socially transforming. As John D. Witvliet correctly observes, 'When practiced as an act of faith, lament can be a powerfully healing experience.' Lament captures a pain that informs but does not define the meaning of life. Paradoxically, praise needs pain. Praise that makes sense echoes with the remembrance of suffering reversed. The current social trend views everyone as a victim. This capitalizes on the first part of lament, but without the crowning praise. Patrick Miller warns, 'Both the lowly and the powerful will be tempted to conclude that the status is quo, that possibilities unseen are inauthentic and unlikely, that the world's power to define reality is ultimate and unchallenged.' The goal should be the social transformation." -In experiencing and responding to real pain in the world, it is ironic to me that we are so illiterate in one of the most "productive" (transformative) acts of defiant faith - lament and mourning (complaining).I took this course at MBI with Dr. Peterman & Dr. Schmutzer and tell every pastor I know to read it. Massively important and even a sadly underrated conversation.

Between Pain & Grace is an honest and refreshing theological reflection on the pervasive reality of suffering- honest, in that it does not brush over the disturbing and unnerving nature of the subject, but treats it with solemnity and its victims with significance- and refreshing, in that its content confronts the various illusions into which many church communities today have bought. These illusions in the church contribute to the silencing and disillusionment of its sheep, whose cries need to be given a voice, rather than their shepherding. If the embodied and emotional suffering of the Lord Jesus and his followers is clearly articulated in the Scriptures, should the church not also be a safe place where lament is embrace and difficult questions are welcomed and honored? Between Pain & Grace is a step towards the breakdown of facades that inhibit true worship: facades of power, happiness, sincerity… and a call for believers to reclaim the sacred language of suffering. From the perspective of a Bible college student and a pupil of Dr. Schmutzer and Dr. Peterman, I found the reflections in this book deeply empowering, refreshing, and liberating. I highly recommend this book.

This book is has so much good and practical insight into pain and suffering, with a slightly different focus from Moody Bible Institute professors. (I used it as one of my references on the subject for a theology class at another university.)

Opened my eyes to things I had not seen before. Helps to develop the understanding and is very useful for approaching your congregation in relation to the suffering that so many go thru.

This is a highly technical yet engaging and thought-provoking book. It is not the easiest to read if you have no biblical training, yet it is sure to radically challenge preconceptions and traditional models for evaluating suffering. I would recommend to anyone who wants further study on the topic.

Shunned grief is spiritual hypocrisy.” p. 105“Clearly, God values words and tears far more than we do.” p. 113“The sovereignty of God is not seen in what he prevents but in his majestic ability to take the broken pieces of our lives and make something beautiful with them.” p. 201“Typically we find that God gives enough gladness to make life bearable or even enjoyable, and enough pain, sorrow, and trial to remind us that we are just passing through. The new earth will be our real home; this cursed planet, even with its immense beauty, will pass.” p. 277“Truly, the Christian life means to exist between two worlds: the old world of sin, alienation, and death and the new world of righteousness, holiness, and life.” p. 281“The cross of Christ does not culminate redemptive history. Rather, it enables the renewal of the Creator’s world, one called “very good.” p. 300The beginning of pain and grace is written in a technical and academic context, but halfway through the book the information shifts to a pastoral context. In the first chapter the authors identify the difference between pain (objective, external, and typically social as opposed to personal and mental) and suffering (subjective, internal, and typically mental and emotional as opposed to physical or social). p. 14 The authors spend the first few chapters defining important concepts found within a biblical theodicy. They coin a new term, or at least a term that I am unfamiliar with, relational ecosystem. Schmutzer defines relational ecosystem, “Like the roots of a massive tree, we are forced to to recognize sin’s amazing ability to penetrate deep into the crevices of human life, especially the relational tissues of our lives. Suffering is intrinsically woven into the fabric of our relationships… So the salvation that God provides in Christ has more to do with helping and restoration than mere rescue and deliverance.” p. 37-38Between Pain and Grace includes some complex concepts, but there are also some very important practical helps for every believer. Whenever I began to read a book on suffering I always wonder where the author will take me. I was not disappointed with the amount of research that was necessary to write this book, nor was I disappointed with the massive amount of Scripture that was included. The authors are very well read and have put forth great effort. However, the book is not comprehensive. Despite the lack of some important information (hell, war in the OT), I was pleased to see that the authors included topics such as the suffering of Jesus, the suffering of God (divine passibility), community suffering, sexual abuse, and mental illness. The previously mentioned topics are very important discussions for our local churches and very few spiritual leaders are discussing them. Within the book there is also a chapter discussing family (toxic families), the patriarch Joseph is the center-point of the chapter.Between Pain and Grace is an excellent read for anyone interested in suffering or theodicy, but like most other books on the topic I was left wanting. It seems that each writer of theodicy focuses on several specifics, and since that is true, there is always something missing. I commend any writer, theologian, or pastor who tackles the difficult and complex topic of pain and suffering. I can read the book on an Android device but not using the Kindle Cloud Reader on Mac/Linux...Bummer. I have a ton of other amazon ebooks that all work with the cloud reader--this is the first book that doesn't work. ;-(So far the book is good I am learning Verilog with it plus the 8bit website is pretty nifty. ;-)

If you want learn Verilog but are looking for something beyond the standard blink/button/7-segment FPGA projects, do yourself a favor and buy this book. Working through the implementations of early video games is both entertaining and educational. The book is well-written (barring a few typos) but the online Verilog editor and CRT emulator really bring the examples to life. It also lets you focus on the code and slow down the frame rate to see what’s going on instantly without having to worry about toolchain implementation details. Highly recommended.

Having had some experience with VHDL on physical FPGAs this looked like a fun way to get a little more familiar with Verilog. The info is shared without too much ceremony and should be quite easy to digest for someone that is new to the topic, the one thing to be aware of is that going from the simulated environment to physical hardware is a pretty big step and not really covered in any depth in this book, so while you will definitely get a feel for what it takes to do a digital design in HDL and get to play with the results there is a big step to get the next level, understanding constraint files, timing constraints, propagation delays etc. etc. But, this does not take a way from the book in anyway, it is a great intro to the topic and you even get to see what it would take to design a basic 8 and 16 bit CPU. I have many books on FPGA development and none are as presented with as much fun, I would say this book make the topic much less intimidating that others make it seem. I will definitely be getting the other books by this author.

This is from the guy who wrote the definitive book on Atari 2600 programming. While he doesn't go into enough detail on how to get a real FPGA board to output video, it is a great text that will help even the beginner to build their own gaming hardware. I didn't know any verilog before I started!

This book is very fun to read. It assumes you have some knowledge about digital logic, but the best part is that can be used with the simulator/emulator in author's Web site. Totally recommended if you like digital design, vidro games, programming and hardware. Thanks!

I won't go into all the "this book contains thus and so..." stuff other than to say I have a TON of candy books and this is probably my favorite. It's a technique book primarily which focuses on nine kinds of confections and helps out with both troubleshooting and presentation (two things other candy books seem to not focus on). The pictures are very helpful (and colorful!) and the text is easy to understand. I've been baking for over 40 years now and candy making can challenge even the most experienced confectioner. With this book I've gleaned great ideas and learned to troubleshoot a few challenging techniques. If you only buy one candy-making book, I highly recommend this one.

I love making candy, but it is usually difficult for me as I live at a high altitude and don't have very much experience. What I love about this book is the clear, concise step by step directions, which is so helpful for a novice like me. I also like that many of the steps have photos that accompany them so I can get a good visual of what my candy should look like. The author also has some trouble shooting help, which helps with everything from high altitude problems, to a bunch of other potential candy catastrophes. I finally fell like I can make candy now! The recipes are delicious, and I like that there are recipes for the beginner like me, all the way up to the advanced, like I hope to be. I also like how different the candy is. I love chocolate, my husband, likes tangy and fruity, and my daughter likes caramel and marshmallows, there are a bunch of really good candy recipes for all of us.

I love Elizabeth's recipes. The instructions are clear and simple for a beginner. Yet the actual candy recipes are fabulous! I have followed her on Aboutcandy.com and Sugar Hero (on facebook) for years. Excellent candy cookbook!

Bought this for my 10 year who LOVES it. Recipes are easy to follow and are interesting. They're not just the regular chocolate this, chocolate that. There's a good variety of candies/ sweets.

My kids and I are enjoying the recipes in this book. I found the instructions easy to follow. It comes with pictures to help illustrate what you should be doing. My kids have enjoyed making candy with their dad. So far their favorite has been the lollipops!

Fantastic! This is great for anyone who wants to take a whack at candy making and learning the basics. We've already done quite a few of the recipes and they are delicious. My wife asked me to stop making them for a while because she's blaming me for 5 extra pounds she's gained since we got the book so I'm limiting the candy making for special ocassions. Make sure you read through the recipe before you start! Preparation is key to avoid ruining a batch.

This is not only a very informative book but now is one of my must have books when making candy. I have three daughters and all three have barrowed it from me and had to pester them to get it back. I think I know what they are getting for their birthdays Ha! Ha!.
