Amazon.com Review

The moral of this book is that behind every great engineering success is a trail of often ignored (but frequently spectacular) engineering failures. Petroski covers many of the best known examples of well-intentioned but ultimately failed design in action -- the galloping Tacoma Narrows Bridge (which you've probably seen tossing cars willy-nilly in the famous black-and-white footage), the collapse of the Kansas City Hyatt Regency Hotel walkways -- and many lesser known but equally informative examples. The line of reasoning Petroski develops in this book were later formalized into his quasi-Darwinian model of technological evolution in The Evolution of Useful Things, but this book is arguably the more illuminating -- and defintely the more enjoyable -- of these two titles. Highly recommended.

This little gem is an analysis of engineering failures, and the learning that occurs due to these failures. While he is himself a professor of engineering, Petroski uses language comprehensible to the layman making this book accessible to almost anyone. During the course of the book he argues that engineering is part art and part science, and that as a discipline engineers focus on building safe, affordable, and reliable things (from paper clips to airliners) to meet a set of requirements. He goes on to elaborate that, being human, engineers make errors and sometimes spectacular failures ensue. The key, he argues, is that once errors are exposed, engineers can glean knowledge from those problems to improve future designs. He uses accessible examples that most people can readily relate to, from researching failure modes on one of his son's toys (the components used most frequently failed first, just like a frequently used light bulb burns out more quickly due to metal fatigue and subsequent cracking), to the deadly collapse of the Kansas City Hyatt Regency Hotel walkways, which killed over 100 people. He also discusses easy to comprehend failures (suspension bridges in strong wind), and more intricate interactions, such as was revealed in the Chicago DC-10 accident. Throughout, he retains an aura of good humor and approachability, which makes this book far more readable than most books in this field. My only complaint about the book is not even the fault of Mr. Petroski at all: the font in the book is very small, and combined with small borders, the book is a bit tough to physically read. Small matter, though, as once you start the book, you will not want to put it down. Well done.

This is an excellent study of how seemingly excellent designs can result in catastrophic failures. The explanations are clear and not so long as to be overwhelmingly. For any professional in the human factors and/or human engineering profession who deals in root cause and accident analyses, it should be a must. It does require some slow and careful reading by a non-engineer (like me) but still provides a clear picture of "how the heck could that have happened?" Actually, this is my second time to purchase this book; the second copy was a gift to a friend.

The book by Henry Petroski taught me important notions: designs constantly evolve to structures bigger, more elegant, more efficient, more economical. And this innovation always involves risk because the changes carry with it conflicting demands of safety factors versus economic considerations. Failure must be anticipated and successful design owns more to failure than success. He correctly points out that failure is also linked to our humanness. His citation of George Santayana is a great final thought: "We must welcome the future, remembering tha soon it will be past; and we must respect the past, knowing that once it was all that was humanly possible."

As a high school mathematics teacher (50 years) with an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering and a master's degree in mathematics I have applied engineering principles to the art of teaching students. Petroski's book is most readable and enlightening. My wife, an artist and former English teacher, also enjoyed the book. I have given copies to students (including our granddaughter) considering engineering as a career, and to fellow teachers.

I have purchased about a half dozen over the past years since it was written.....It is NOT intended for only engineers, but I have found that having engineers read it makes them far more aware of what they are supposed to be doing.

I am not really sure how I came across this book. I think it was by following relevant links on Amazon. Anyway I bought this as well as The Evolution of Useful Things at the same time. I found this a very insightful reading in light of my occupation as a software engineer. Several of my coworkers recently had an email conversation regarding the quailty of software engineered products vs. "real" engineer's and their feats of construction, bridges, airplanes and buildings all things that Petroski covers in details. Some additional thoughts on how structural engineering is different from Enterprise Application Software Engineering:1. --In general software is unlimited, where as Structural Engineering has natural laws. Higher level Patterns are pretty constant, where as within the created construct of software they are reinvited (Object Patterns, EJB Patterns)2. --structures have the added requirement of no death, where as Enterprise Software only has revenue associated with it, not as powerful a motivator as death.3. --software is interactive with behavior, where as a bridge is a bridge[...]

fantastic book for fellow engineers or anybody really! interesting read.

Every engineer needs to understand the thee of this book -- many do not. Non-engineers will be shocked and astonished at the role of failure in the design process.

Henry Petroski is a highly respected professor and author writing about the failures of bridges, buildings and similar civil engineering works. Engineering design is a noble profession. It brings us many great and useful technologies. But, engineering has its limits. Unfortunately, limits may be difficult to see in advance of catastrophic failure. This book reminds us that we must never stop improving our methods of design both from technological as well as human perspectives. It is a classic on engineering design and failure and every engineer should read it.

Review

With its hard-nosed realism and passion for God, this memoir should appeal to people of faith across the political spectrum.--Publishers Weekly (starred review)"Surrounded by violence and poverty and threatened by urban renewal, Transfiguration Lutheran Church under pastor Neumark survived and, perhaps miraculously, thrived . . . Her story proves genuinely inspirational as we follow her from despair and frustration to cautious optimism in the face of a still tenuous future." --Booklist"Breathing Space is a beautifully produced book, and it has a utopian poignancy . . . Yet it is grounded in the virtue of hope."--James S. Torrens, America: The National Catholic WeeklyWinner of a 2004 Wilbur Award

A very good read. The author has the ability to convey her story in an interesting and engaging manner. I laughed and cried reading this book. It was insightful reading the author's thoughts, fears, hopes and dreams for her ministry.

I am loving this book. I picked it up as part of preparing a sermon for Transfiguration Sunday. The sermon is yet to be written, but I know that the book will be influential. Thank you Pastor Neumark for your masterful writing and your courageous example.

I enjoyed this easy read as I journeyed with Heidi Neumark in the South Bronx. Inspiring stories and life changing stories of how to preach the grace, mercy, and love of God in a place torn apart by violence. You will want to buy this book!

As a member of Transfiguration during this period of time, I took a beautiful trip down memory lane! Thanks Pastor Heidi!!

This is one brave woman in a compelling story of fulfilling God's mission.

I learned so much from this book. It made me think differently about the challenges of living in urban areas and the joys to be found in all of God's world amongst His people.

This book brought up serious subjects about the inner city. Also, the pressure on citizens. The importance of faith in our lives.

Neumark is authentic, yet hopeful in her description of what it's like to do ministry in a depressed urban area. She's a great writer and a humble, compassionate person.

This book will resound well with those infused with passion, teaching them about this feeling and how to recognize it, temper it, and cultivate it effectively without giving it vent to consume us. There are parts where personally it was difficult to face truths about my own passions. Brad and Steve are prime coaches for dealing with these at times harrowing discoveries. All told, a masterful look at an aspect needed in very healthy doses in today's world. Bravo, gentlemen!

I had this book on my radar after thoroughly enjoying Peak Performance. The authors have created another excellent work here. The research and advice that they present is very insightful and is unlike other books I’ve read on high performance and single-minded pursuits of excellence. The prose is very clean and direct. There is something here for everybody, no matter where your interests lie.

Practical examples, tips, practices and snips of great, solid, masterfully written information.

I feel comfortable recommending this little book more for it being a trigger to make one think than any specific advice it gives. Don’t get me wrong. There is specific advice and it’s worthwhile but we’re in a one size never fits all situation where thinking of what the authors’ research has turned up will likely improve your thinking about dedication to task (or career or anything) more than the specifics of what’s worked well for others or what the authors view as general case recommendations. The book starts out with the ‘famous folks who’ve done this’ routine which tends to put my fur up. It’s a variant of the “defer to authority” fallacy. Soon, however, they leave a good deal of that behind and instead go into the meat of the book which tries to advise on how to live a balanced goal oriented life. The key is not just balance but what to focus on as a goal. Do you wish an Olympic gold medal? The key may be not to focus on being on the podium but something else. Not surprisingly, the book is oriented toward athletics which makes sense. After all, that’s where even common weekend athletes wish to improve to the point of excelling. The book reads well – the authors know how to write with an upbeat faster pace which squeezes all the filler and/or boring pointless diatribes. I laughed out loud (at the doctor’s office!) at the authors pointing out what the Buddha called the hedonic cycle. That one sentence is worth the cost of the book as well as the time to read it. I will remember it forever.

Written by coaches and trainers Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness, The Passion Paradox is a self-help book that explores, as the title indicates, the double-edged sword of passion: It can be a great motivator, but it can be a dead-end leading to burnout, delusions, and escapism. How does one harness passion effectively? How does one balance passion with discipline and structure? What is the difference between passion based on the ego’s insecurities and passion based on the intrinsic joy of one’s craft? The author’s explore these questions in an easy-to-read self-help format with a review section at the end of each chapter. In this book you will find the etymology of passion in terms of its historical meaning in religion, its biological foundation (dopamine), and its correct application in the context of self-determination theory, as presented by psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan. Those looking to hone their passion for their career, art, or other endeavors will find this a very useful and meaningful book. I recommend as a supplement to The Paradox Passion two books by Cal Newport: So Good They Can’t Ignore You and Deep Work.

To me this book is full of common sense because it has been the way I conduct my life since youth. I found this more of a reminder of how passion can be either fulfilling or destructive. The reminders in the margins are excellent and the conclusion chapter is really what the book is about in two-pages.EXAMPLES of REMINDERS:- "The best route to making your passion a bigger part of your life is to do so gradually."- "Someone who embodies the mastery mind-set judges herself not on whether she accomplishes her goal but rather on how well she executes on her process."MY UNDERSTANDING:The sentences below sums up what this book is to me and not necessarily what was exactly said or meant in the text:- Pursuing an interest and becoming a successful master (or mistress) requires being intrinsically motivated to achieve results rather than being externally motivated on reaching the goal. In other words, satisfaction and passion must come from within otherwise it can become toxic.- One must be self-aware and re-evaluate their passion.- Pursuing a passion means life is unbalanced by default but if we look at our entire life as a whole, we are usually balanced.- We must be patient and keep striving toward our passion to achieve success.- Some of us may have many passions and choose to re-evaluate where we are at different times in our lives so as to re-direct our passions.- What helps us to achieve the life we want is to think about death, This helps us realize there is only so much time that we have so we should be doing what moves us.- There is a fine line between passion and obsession. In summary, this felt like a pep-talk and a reminder of how I already live. I was not personally enlightened although I did appreciate the inspiring notes in the margin.

Most books tell you to follow your passion. the money will follow. this book urges caution in following your passion as it often results in the elimination of everything else of importance in your life. IT cautions us against being obsessive and alerts us to the role fear plays in our life.In a world whereto are measured by your successes, this book gives you a few moments of trying to have a balanced life and not live your life on the need for the renewal of the feelings of dopamine the we get during the chase.I read it in doctors' offices and in transit and found it helpful and clarifying. I recommend it.
