Review

"A remarkable new book by Clemson University economist Thomas Hazlett... tells a chilling story of an agency that has always been both more and less than it appears to be." Larry Downes, Washington Post "A fascinating history... exposing how inefficient, and perhaps corrupt, our spectrum policy really is.... Mr. Hazlett devotes a substantial portion of his book to arguments for reforms [and the book] is full of valuable instruction [on] the strategic use of the regulatory process." Greg Rosston, Stanford University, writing in the Wall Street Journal"A perfect blend of economic insight, historical anecdotes, and lessons that present and future regulators in any industry can use to benefit citizens and society rather than being guided by their own aims, biases, or fears. Anybody interested in telecom, politics, regulation, or economics should read this book; they will learn much." Jeff Dorfman, University of Georgia, writing in Forbes"Few issues could seem more dry and technical than how to divide up radio spectrum... But that impression would be mistaken...  The Political Spectrum: The Tumultuous Liberation of Wireless Technology, from Herbert Hoover to the Smartphone, tells a thrilling, roller-coaster tale of how US regulators often blocked progress... Hazlett explains how recent reforms helped liberate the radio spectrum... ushering in the 'smartphone revolution', ubiquitous social media and the amazing wireless world." William Echikson, Huffington Post  "U.S. spectrum guru Tom Hazlett... has written a spectrum thriller." Kane Mumford, Policy Tracker

A well written and researched work regarding the history and shortcomings of the regulatory process since the radio and television eras. The author demonstrates how the outdated regulatory process threatens the natural growth in todays most important wireless media. The benefits to the public with the limited regulation of the cellular industry (reduced prices, greater access) are a tangible demonstration of the power of market forces instead of regulatory overreach. The author has created a carefully crafted narrative that does not require you to be an economist or tech savant to understand the implications of overregulation by starting with wireless media that we all can relate to, radio and television. The timing of this work is critical as we are continually discussing “net neutrality”. Only market forces can level the monopolistic playing field gained by broadband. The author has done something quite important in this day of complaints. In addition to telling us the problem he has offered carefully considered solutions that can keep the U.S competitive in a rapidly changing world market. When a person of Dr. Hazlett’s experience, knowledge and expertise offers a solution to such an important issue I can only hope that the powers that be (FCC, Congress) will carefully consider these clearly explained remedies that can be implemented in a short time frame. This book bodes well for the resurgence of the non-fiction genre.

As a former engineer, entrepreneur, and venture capital investor who spent 40 years struggling to innovate under the arcane and destructive power of the FCC, Tom Hazlett’s romp through the history of this woebegone regulatory agency brought back many memories while filling in many blanks. This is not your usual boring academic treatise! Peppered with revealing anecdotes and acerbic commentary, reading this book was like sitting in a bar listening to Tom regale you with his stories, something I’ve had the pleasure of doing on many a late night. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to understand how badly served the public has been by politicized central planners captive to special interests, collectively retarding the march of technology and business progress for far too long. The FCC needs to go the way of the Civil Aeronautics Board and the Interstate Commerce Commission, and Tom explains exactly what to replace it with. Kudos on a great read.

This is two books for the price of one. The first is a readable history of one of America’s most important natural resources - radio spectrum - since its discovery and commercial development for entertainment, mass-marketing, telephony and the Internet. This is a story full of heroic pioneers, and the heroic (often mistaken) assumptions that drove them. The second book, contained within the first, is the meditation of a first-rate scholar on the intractable difficulty of effective government regulations in general, and the hidden social costs that can result from systems of public management that fail to take account of of the inevitable characteristics of political and bureaucratic institutions. Serious learning, lightly worn.

This book tells the story of wireless communications in the United States -- the dynamic interactions and clashes which determined how spectrum has been assigned in the U.S., for what communications systems, starting with the advent of broadcast radio in the 1920s. With rich research, how spectrum was awarded and who won and who lost, how visionaries and mercenaries fought political battles over the awarding, the author brings to life the myriad twists and turns that constructed, sometimes haphazardy, our present day spectrum use. In the award and use of communications spectrum, regulation or lack thereof, has been a major factor in the efficient, best, and highest uses of spectrum. The regulatory philosophies of the Federal Communications Commission were basically of two kinds: heavy government regulation, lengthy award processes, and the inevitable intrusion of special interest lobbying in influencing and determining the regulatory outcome; and the reliance on marketplace forces beginning in 1981 with the Reagan FCC. -- both to allocate spectrum. The two spectrum allocation models are discussed in detail, and how each awarded that spectrum: the central command regulation of politically appointed FCC commissioners, and what the author refers to as the "toaster"model, meaning allocation through marketplace forces,The book is highly educational, but at the same time, entertaining -- even amusing. Marconi tested the first wireless system, using a transmitter on one side of a river, with a receiver on the other. The author amuses by observing that broadcasting at that moment was quite limited, as only Marconi had a receiver. The author had a bird-eye view of spectrum sausage making in the 1990s, as a chief economist at the FCC; As an economist set on seeing marketplace mechanisms to make spectrum awards, the author must have been appalled at the heavily political process that preceeded far more fair and rational ways of awarding spectrum -- namely spectrum actions. The by now validated method awarded the players spectrum who bid highest, because they had in mind the highest and best use of that spectrum.Congress, of course, loved any system that deposited auction proceeds in the Treasury, to be spent.."Political Spectrum" is a wise primer on how to best allocate communications spectrum. It is, based upon the trial and error of the U.S finding the best way to allocate in a manner best serving the public . It should be read globally by communications regulators, professors of communications, and policy makers outside of government, It's a fun read of an up to now hidden part of American regulatory and political communications history.

EXCERPT: 'It took approximately eight hours for Sean Taylor to die.'She listened as the man spoke, her heart beating a little faster, her eyes blinking a little more than necessary. She shifted in her seat. Her bottom was numb, her legs heavy. She didn’t want to hear the details. She needed to. Her gaze fixed on the coroner; she couldn't move her limbs and escape the courtroom, couldn't close her ears to the words. She had to know.ABOUT THIS BOOK: ‘I’m Alice. And my son is a murderer.’Deborah’s son was killed four years ago.Alice’s son is in prison for committing that crime.Deborah would give anything to have her boy back, and Alice would do anything to right her son’s wrongs.Driven by guilt and the need for redemption, Alice has started a support group for parents with troubled children. But as the network begins to grow, she soon finds out just how easy it is for one little lie to spiral out of control…They call it mother’s intuition, but can you ever really know your own child?A twisty and unnerving thriller about the price of motherhood and the unthinkable things we do to protect our children.MY THOUGHTS: Oh dear, where do I start? The title? An Avalanche of Lies would be more apt.The characters tell the story from multiple points of view. Connie is a psychologist. Deborah is the murdered boy's mother. Alice is the mother of the boy who murdered him. And Tom, the gamer. All good so far, right? Wrong. It all gets terribly muddled and confusing. I kept having to check whose point of view I was reading, then having to remind myself who they were. The characters were almost interchangeable, definitely almost indistinguishable. They were all whiny, whinging, introspective, angst ridden, dare I say it, idiots. Especially the one who should have known better. The plot dragged. There was zero tension, zero suspense. It was messy and the twist was so obvious that it was a total anticlimax.I almost dnf'd this book several times during the read, and on reflection, I wish I had. There was just far too much unlikely and unbelievable plot to make this a worthwhile read for me.I understand that reading is an entirely subjective experience and that, while this book wasn't one I enjoyed, you may well love it. So if the excerpt piques your interest and you like the sound of the plot synopsis, please get a copy and read it.THE AUTHOR: Sam Carrington lives in Devon with her husband and three children. She worked for the NHS for 15 years, during which time she qualified as a nurse. Following the completion of a Psychology degree she went to work for the prison service as an Offending Behaviour Programme Facilitator. Her experiences within this field inspired her writing. She left the service to spend time with her family and to follow her dream of being a novelist. SAVING SOPHIE was her debut psychological thriller novel and became a #1 ebook bestseller.DISCLOSURE: Thank you to Avon Books via Netgalley for providing a digital ARC of One Little Lie by Sam Carrington for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions.

One Little Lie is told to us by a number of characters, quite a few characters, with different chapters told by different characters. I like this method of storytelling but sometimes it makes the book a bit disjointed and confusing.I’m not great with names and so sometimes I struggle when there are too many character names as I can’t remember who they all are and so it takes the first part of each chapter to remind me who is talking and what they’re doing. One Little Lie has many narrators, I would say too many but each of them play an important part to the story and I couldn’t imagine any of them being left out. Some have more to say than others, but all are part of the puzzle.I have to admit that I have never really given much thought to what the parents of a murderer must feel, I’ve fleetingly thought of it, especially when there have been mass school shootings in America, but it isn’t something that I tend to dwell on. But this book made me think about it.I know when there are murders many people say that we should talk about the victim and not the murderer, and I definitely agree with that, but how would it feel to be the victims mother, your son murdered in a brutal and painful way, but all the focus is on the boy who did it and his parents? Your son seems to be forgotten but then that mother wants to make amends for what her son did and asks for forgiveness. One Little Lie is a twisty read, what you think is happening might not be what is really happening, and are people who they seem? I think that the story is a clever one, there’s lots to like and the pace is fast with short chapters, but something was missing with it, somehow it all didn’t quite fit. I enjoyed reading, I wanted to finish it so that I could find out how it was all going to end and that is a sure sign of a decent read. But this book was so very nearly brilliant, and it’s a shame that it didn’t quite get there. But it so nearly did.

This book has a delightfully sinister plot - Alice's son killed another boy. Deborah's son was the one who was murdered. Alice wants for nothing more than Deborah's forgiveness, and is trying everything to find a way to redeem herself, including starting a support group. Except that Alice has told one little lie, which is about to spiral well out of her control. It took me a few chapters to really get into this book - the plot does jump ahead in chunks chapter to chapter, and therefore demands your attention as a reader. I enjoyed the way the story moved from character to character, as it kept the plot flying along, but I also had to be sure I was on top of whose perspective I was reading at any given moment, as there were alot of details to keep track of.The twists absolutely made it all the more absorbing, as I didn't see them coming at all. I love a book that can surprise me, and this one certainly did.A great summer mystery read!

Intricately plotted but also, at least for me, confusing, in large part because of the varying perspectives. Alice and Deborah are inextricably linked by the fact that Alice's son murdered Deborah's. I liked the first book but thought this one might have just taken things a bit too far- it didn't plow new ground and wallowed, to a certain extent, in the crime without taking a reflective look. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. I'd recommend this as a standalone, especially if you're looking for a psychological thriller.

This book was rather confusing as it is told by multiple people and until you get to know them it truly doesn't make sense. When you finish the book, you realize why it had to be written with so many main characters and it makes sense. It had some really good twists and turns and definitely keeps you hooked until the end. I received an advanced readers copy from NetGalley and Avon Books UK. All opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed this, it’s a follow on from Bad Sister with the same characters, very good.
