I'm biased because I'm a huge Susan Juby fan. I love how she presents a clear message in her YA stories with crazy humor. I love her books for adults as well.

(Full disclosure: Susan Juby is my favorite living writer. Her books have been inspiring me and brightening my life since 2004. She is one of my heroes.)If you are looking for a fluffy, soulless beach read, move right along. You might have been misled by the conventionally attractive, skinny, blonde, white model who poses on the book’s cover. But conventional characters are scarce in Juby’s books, and they certainly aren’t given the spotlight. Juby writes about oddballs, outcasts, misfits — characters who are lovable but flawed and complicated. And while the tagline misrepresents the book as perpetuating gender stereotypes (pitting “one style-obsessed girl” against “one fashion-phobic guy”), Juby in fact constantly challenges norms of all sorts — and does so with remarkable subtlety and nuance. Her writing is lively, funny, humane, and inclusive. It is this inclusiveness that I especially want to draw attention to, at the expense of any discussion of the book’s plot. (Suffice it to say that it was compelling, thoughtful, bittersweet, and just so much fun.)Juby’s most recent books (Republic of Dirt, The Truth Commission, and The Fashion Committee) are increasingly excellent examples of how white authors can write books that are color-conscious, as well as diverse in terms of gender, sexuality, ability, size, etc. Juby does not try to speak for people of color and write from their perspectives, but she also does not write as if she were colorblind. Thus, her protagonists are white, but their whiteness is not taken for granted — it is named, and other white characters’ whiteness is mentioned as well (“a very young white man” rather than “a very young man,” for example). This may seem like a small detail, but acknowledging that white people “have” race is one way of disrupting white supremacy (in the more academic sense, not in the hate group sense).I was particularly impressed by Juby’s use of intertextuality to diversify The Fashion Committee. Throughout the book, she sprinkles references to artists of color and their work, for example A Tribe Called Red (a First Nations music group) and Moonshot (a collection of Indigenous comics). In so doing, she decenters whiteness in her own work, and promotes artists of color to her readers.Personally, I felt (happily, surprisingly) represented as a non-binary person when one of Charlie Dean’s trademark fashion tips acknowledged her potential gender nonconforming readers, and when they/them pronouns were used for an androgynous model. The book was also just queerer overall than I was expecting (and it’s done so fantastically — but I’m not going to spoil it for you).As always with Juby’s books, The Fashion Committee left me feeling inspired — not only to create, but to keep fighting and to stay true to myself. And as for the story that sparked those feelings of inspiration — I’ll leave it for you to read and find out for yourself.

With a name like The Fashion Committee, I wasn't expecting anything deep. So I was surprised when I read this. The light tone is in stark contrast to the harsh reality of one of the characters. I really enjoyed this book, as I think it said a lot about art, following your passions, and not letting your circumstances determine your future.What I Liked:Characters:The novel is written as a he said/she said book. Each chapter's POV alternates between Charlie Dean, the fashion obsessed teen, and John Thomas-Smith, who enters the competition as a backdoor way of getting into the elite Green Pastures high school of fine arts.I loved Charlie. Behind her seemingly superficial love of clothes lies a teen with a horrific home life. Fashion is her escape, so she doesn't have to face the fact that her dad is a drug addict. Charlie uses a lot of French words (thanks to Google translate!), that she hopes will make her sound more sophisticated. I loved her determination to create an oasis in her bedroom where she could let her imagination soar.She is also dead set on becoming a clothing designer. She has a focus that leaves no time for friends or a love life. But maybe that cute girl who is a fellow competitor (and a major flirt) will nudge Charlie into making room for a romance? I was rooting for Charlie to have some happiness.Mischa is the new, very young girlfriend of Charlie's dad (they met in rehab). She is really trying to stay clean and sober, but she is a very damaged person due to an abusive ex-boyfriend. Mischa becomes Charlie's model, and inspiration, for the competition. It was beautiful to have Mischa see that other people saw her as a valuable person.Story:I love novels with competitions in them. Even though I know nothing about fashion, the author does a wonderful job educating the reader about fashion theory and all the thinking that goes into creating clothes. I think the competition, itself, was amazing, and showed lots of teens who are exploring their passions. I also liked that Charlie had some pretty serious competition in the contest. I hate it when it is a forgone conclusion that the main character will win. You really don't know who the winner will be until the very end.This book has a lot to say about creating art, whether it be as a fashion designer, a painter, or someone who welds metal into cool sculptures. There are so many ways to express yourself. But it seems the truly important thing is not the end product, but the creative process, itself.I also appreciate that there isn't a manufactured romance between Charlie and John. They rarely interact with each other and have their own story lines.What I Didn't Like:Characters:I really don't care for John. Since his story makes up half of the book, this is a huge problem for me. I just think he is a terrible person on so many levels. First of all, he enters the competition as a backdoor way into Green Pasture's metals program. He figures he can bluff his way through the competition, and after he wins he will just transfer over to the other program. This is so insulting to the other contestants, for whom fashion is their lives.John is also awful to his girlfriend. He is easily flattered by the attention of a rich girl who already attends Green Pastures, and he lets her help him in the contest. Cheater!!! The only reason for John's character is to contrast his life with Charlie's. I guess his purpose in the book is to show how Charlie shows true guts by overcoming real hardships. He is a whiny pretty boy by comparison.Overall, I think this book is worth reading for Charlie's character, alone. She has an amazing resilience that will make you cheer, and break your heart.

She advises policy makers around the world on innovation-led growth and is currently a member of the Scottish Government's Council of Economic Advisors, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network Leadership Council, and SITRA's Advisory Panel in Finland. Her current research projects include two funded by the EC Horizon 2020 programme, Innovation-fuelled, Sustainable, Inclusive Growth (ISIGrowth) and Distributed Global Financial Systems for Society (Dolfins), and new projects on rethinking medical innovation, funded by the Open Society Foundations, and mission-oriented innovation policies with the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB). I'm writing this the day after the third Republican presidential debate. I doubt any of the candidates read The Entrepreneurial State, but they should have.This book debunks plenty of myths, most notably that keeping government "out" of the economy is the best way to stimulate growth in three key ways.First, it demonstrates the ways in which national governments have contributed to the success of today's iconic companies, including my beloved Apple.Second, it shows that far from "picking winners" improperly as politicians claim, public/private partnerships provide leadership for key sectors of the economy, whether that be national security (where it has been most pronounced) to environmental security (where it is arguably most needed).Third, it makes the case for an economy based on partnerships in which the state and the private sector share both the risks and the rewards for economic innovation.I would have liked the book to go even farther and look at the role such partnerships could/should play in an interdependent networked economic system, but it does enough to warrant a read by just about anyone interested in social change, including a peacebuilder like me.

The importance of the public sector as a key player in an innovative ecosystem is not often acknowledged nor well understood. In a brilliant book, the author has made the case for the public sector role persuasively. In a world that glorifies individual entrepreneurs and venture capitalists as the risk takers who drive the innovative economies, readers of this book will be led to realize that it is quite often the public sector investors who have been the true risk takers with respect to the innovations that have made the most impact on society. Another key insight provided is that when the rewards for innovation and risk taking are disproportionately allocated to those whose risks are relatively modest (i.e. venture capital) this creates an innovation system that increases inequality and is less sustainable than one which rewards risk takers (public and private) more fairly. Unless the public sector can reap rewards that recognize its role in the creation and regulation of new markets, the innovation system will be less likely to create major breakthroughs like the internet, nanotechnology, etc. The clear message of this book is that a true innovation system that is sustainable and that will create transformational change requires the full participation of the private sector and the public sector working together to do what each does best.

I first learned about this book when I heard an hourlong podcast where Mariana Mazzucato, the author, is interviewed by Stella Creasy who is a London School of Economics trained Labour Party member of parliament, about Mazzucato's research findings and policy proposals.Lately, we have been hearing some bold proposals about a Green New Deal. Many have dismissed this idea as pie in the sky. Some have supported it as crucially necessary to the survival of the planet, but have been vague as to how to actually bring this about. Well, Mariana Mazzucato, Chair in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value, and Director of the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose at University College, London, addressed this very issue in her 2015 book, "The Entrepreneurial State." She points out that our current economy is built around fossil fuels, and that to address climate change will require a large restructuring of our basic economy. This will include building new Public-Private partnerships, and innovation that will create new jobs, new security and repair infrastructure. To accomplish this, we first have to let go of false myths we hold about the responsibility as well as the competence of the state. Mazzucato does a superb job of debunking those myths in this book. While parts of the book are fairly dense, even a non-economist like me can understand most of her points. This is a must read by anyone interested in saving the planet and by all policy makers.

In this book, Mazzucato makes the argument that the state is the best actor to be the one to make long-range investments in technology, as private actors under capitalism are too focused on short term rewards to really be able to focus on real blue ocean development.In fact, she argues, some of the more celebrated examples of private innovation can be linked to research and investment the state has made. This process of celebrating the private corporation has a way of erasing what the state has done and allows political rhetoric to attack research the state does. Her best example in the book is the Apple iPhone, where she looks at the basic research from the internet to mobile telephony to interface design that goes back to work governments did starting thirty or more years ago. I think as a reader that this example is strong enough to support her basic argument, but she also continues in the book to look at solar power as another example. Because this isn’t as widespread as the iPhone and its clones, it feels like a weaker example, even if down the road it will be more prevalent than the iPhone.

Mazzucato's analysis is absolutely brilliant and this is extremely well written. Anyone who believes that governments are useless should read this book. It really opened my eyes to the innovative aspects of government institutions, and the extent to which they are not only entrepreneurial themselves, but enable other entrepreneurs to build fortunes off of government innovation and investment. Every single online entrepreneur, for example, owes the US government a ton of gratitude - and those who will inevitably make fortunes on alternative energy will as well.

The horseback riding is whole body experience. This book describes how you should FEEL when you ride which is very enlightening. Knowing technique is very important but not necessarily helpful if you do not anticipate how your body must feel while doing various riding exercises. It is simply unclear. You are unable to judge what's wrong despite of your being "technically" correct (or so it seems to you). This book fills this gap beautifully. It also teaches not only how to receive energy from the horse and enjoy it but also how the horse can benefit (mentally and physically) from a good rider.Only one example. I read a lot of descriptions of what is a good half-halt and how to do it. Only after reading this book I finally FELT it. I felt how my horse re-balanced himself under me in response to my re-balancing myself. My horse is very very bouncy. By end of today's lesson I could do sitting trot on him because he collected himself considerably. It was still a little choppy but now I can see that it is at least POSSIBLE. Our circles were super (comparing :-)).I highly recommend this book. As one reader mentioned, it is mine opinion (I can be wrong) that it is not for first-time riders or vacation riders but for people who had ~10 lessons and are planning to continue riding.

Had to buy a copy to replace one from years ago. I recently came out of retirement to help my neighbor improve her skills and understanding of basic horsemanship. She had ridden for quite some time in her youth at a rental barn. This book is a classic and a necessity for anyone just starting to ride or wants to help their own balance and effectiveness no matter what discipline you ride. Sally Swift offers many ways to visualize her concepts all of which help the rider become more relaxed and balanced. I would lend a copy to all of my students (obviously not returned by my last student years ago.)

Buy this book -- if you're just starting, you'll probably get 3x more out of every hour you spend on horseback! Even if you aren't, I'm sure it's worth the $10 or so... your horse will probably thank you for it, too.I bought this just before I started riding lessons and devoured it. It's fun to read and extremely helpful. Coincidentally, on my third lesson or so, my instructor suggested that if I were to get just one riding book, I should buy this book called Centered Riding by Sally Swift... I told her I already had it, and we laughed.

The one thing I took away from this book was that it is best to ride imagining that there is a enormous spring above you causing you to sit straight. I applied this to every day life. I walked around for months pulled up by this string. And then I went for a check up at my doctor and he told me I had grown to centimeters. At the age of 50. No joke.

The best book on all things, proper and correct, in preparation for, and in the act, of riding. Have found no other succinct text, clever and thought-provoking illustrations, and factual processing. Well written, easy to understand and if you do it all to her specs, you will then have nothing but the perfect outcome for you and your horse. Bible-like, the definitive go-to book!

This is the horse riding bible. Sometimes I just open to a page to start my day with a nugget of truth. I could read it for hours. It's my favorite book. I had to buy another copy of it because I loaned mine out and the person I loaned it to wouldn't give it back until she had her own copy. This should be on all horse owner's shelves no matter what discipline.

Sally Swift makes everything so simple and easy to understand, throw out all the crap people try to teach you and go with S.S. she's got the know-how!

Anyone that wants to ride well and really desires to stay out of their horses way will enjoy and benfit from the principles Sally teaches. Her methods also have a positive crossover effect on one's posture in everyday life. This DVD and/or book will benefit Western and English riders as a "Balanced Seat" is the universal prerequisite to good riding. I had borrowed the book years ago and recently bought the DVD for my library. Because I work alone and do not have access to many qualified trainers and clinics; books and DVDs are my teachers. The DVD is good for quick "see how". The sound and picture quality of the DVD was good. I do think however, the book provides much more insight and detail. If you are a "high achiever" into detail I would get the book first. As your balance improves your horse will thank you and as we all know "if your horse ain't happy...no one's happy!"
