Review

“Greene's nuanced portrait of this heroine places Teferra at the center of a global crisis but never loses its focus on the innocent victims.” ―People (four stars, Critic's Choice)“A powerful story--by turns sad, politically infuriating, and inspiring--and Greene brings her formidable intelligence and eloquence to the telling. Grade: A” ―Entertainment Weekly (EW Pick)“Elegant and profoundly evocative writing…as much a call-to-arms as a narrative account of one woman's struggle to fight the disease.” ―Washington Post“A truly inspiring book…gripping and heartfelt…This is a story not to be missed.” ―Christian Science Monitor“A deeply personal chronicle of human suffering and sinister global politics…featuring orphaned children and devoted adults whose courage will inspire even the most skeptical.” ―Chicago Tribune

I experienced several starts and stops with this book--not because it's poorly written or dull, but because it's very sad. The relationship between how sad I find a book and how many times I have to put it down to check on my sleeping children is a directly proportional one. I checked on my children a lot while reading this book, watching their little backs rise and fall and counting their laborious REM-sleep breaths to make sure all was well with them. I remember, as a kid, rolling my eyes at my own mother when she would wince, gasp and recoil at the sight of something tragic happening to a child on TV. Then I had kids of my own, and I've since apologized for my cavalier attitude. I winced and gasped and recoiled a lot while reading this book--then checked on my sleeping kids. There Is No Me Without You accomplishes a lot. It primarily tells the story of Haregewoin Teferra, a Christian Ethiopian woman who, in order to cope with the loss of her husband and eldest daughter, started a make-shift, grass-roots orphanage for stigmatized AIDS orphans in her hometown, Addis Ababa. Intertwined with Haregwoin's amazing story is a history of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, its origins and impact. In telling the story, Melissa Fay Greene does so many things right. She resists deifying her subject, presenting Haregewoin's flaws alongside her virtues, which results in a nuanced, credible and moving profile. She also creates an imagery-rich picture of Addis Ababa in all its colorful, raucous and dusty splendor. I feel almost like I've been there after reading this book.I only had two problems with the book--the first is a matter of craft and the second a matter of argumentation.Greene writes with a lot of feeling, which is one of the many reasons this book is so engaging. But, in describing many scenes where she herself was not present, she steps into the role of a third-person omniscient narrator, often detailing with great flourish the thoughts and emotions of children in tragic situations. There were times when her writing felt a bit audacious, and I found myself asking, how can you claim to know what this child felt and thought as he was being ripped from his dying mother's arms? I'm sure she conducted extensive interviews with the children, but I did feel like she encroached inappropriately on their emotional landscapes at times, giving them thoughts and feelings that were, perhaps, not their own.My second concern is regarding her argumentation. In discussing the history of HIV/AIDS, she does not take a neutral stance. Her argument is very moral and often very persuasive. She rightly condemns the ignorance, indifference and greed of Western governments and pharmaceutical companies for the ways in which they stood back and watched, or looked away, while HIV spread rapidly in marginalized and third-world communities. She also condemns the religious, conservative moralizers and their insistence on prevention rather than treatment. She makes a few really good claims, and I appreciate what I learned from her. But, the problem with her argument in my eyes is this: in order to distance herself from people like Jerry Falwell who believe that God engineered HIV as a unique punishment for homosexuals (and who can blame her for wanting to do that?), she completely ignores the fact that so many of the suffering women and children she profiles contracted the virus because of the moral failings of men in their communities. Greene writes as though rape, sexual exploitation and marital infidelity are sad inevitabilities not worth discussing. Acknowledging these elephants in the room does not mean that we ignore treatment options for those already infected with HIV, and it does not mean we assume that everyone contracted the virus these ways. But, we can't ignore the gross gender inequality and violence against women and girls that is facilitating the spread of HIV in the third world, particularly Africa.Just recently I read a BBC article that addressed the alarming HIV rate among girls in South Africa. The article states that "at least 28% of South African schoolgirls are HIV positive compared with 4% of boys because `sugar daddies' are exploiting them." 28%! Authors Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn explain the "sugar daddy" culture in their book Half the Sky: "In South Africa, successfully middle-aged men often keep young teenage girls as mistresses, and many teenagers see such `sugar daddies' as a ladder to a better life" (139).Also discussed in Half the Sky is the pervasive culture of rape that plagues many African nations:"In Darfur, it gradually became clear that the Sudanese-sponsored Janjaweed militias were seeking out and gang-raping women of three African tribes, cutting of their ears or otherwise mutilating them to mark them forever as rape victims...Sudan also blocked aid groups from bringing into Darfur postexposure prophylaxis kits, which can greatly reduce the risk that a rape victim will be infected with HIV" (83)."Mass rapes have been reported at stunning levels in recent conflicts. Half of women in Sierra Leone endured sexual violence or the threat of it during the upheavals in that country, and a United Nations report claims that 90 percent of girls and women over the age of three were sexually abused in part of Liberia during the civil war there" (83).Out of the Congo are numerous reports of rape being used as a tool of war.And regarding HIV and marital infidelity: "Routinely in Africa and Asia, women stay safe until they are married, and then they contract AIDS from their husbands" (138).There is a scene in There Is No Me Without You where the author listens to a man tell the story of his family, particularly the death of his wife. When the man alludes to the marital infidelity that infected him, and subsequently his wife, with HIV, Greene seems to pride herself in mentioning that none of the listeners, herself included, judged him at that moment. I'm not suggesting that he be scorned or spit upon, or treated meanly and without compassion. I'm not suggesting that he be left to think on his sins and languish in some trash-infested alley without treatment. I'm not suggesting that these problems are unique to Africa or even that we need to focus all of our attention on sexual ethics when it comes to the spread of HIV/AIDS. But, it does trouble me to consider the reality that if little white girls were being made into sexual baubles by older white men, and if white women were routinely contracting HIV from their unfaithful husbands, you wouldn't be able to hear yourself think over the cacophony of outrage. So, why is it that Greene, whose wrath burns against Western leaders and pharmaceutical companies, is incapable of arousing even a modicum of judgment for this poor man who brought ruin, even if inadvertently, to his entire family? Is it compassion and a spirit of equality that motivates her? Or is it a more subtle and insidious form of racism, the kind that, for fear of being politically-incorrect, refuses to view this man as a moral equal, a moral agent who was capable of being a better husband to his wife and a better father to his children, but chose not to? God help us if we continue to view rape, sexual exploitation and marital infidelity as sad inevitabilities, and God help us if we continue to view Africans as people who don't know any better.

I read this book years ago, and recently bought this for a friend as a gift. Have you ever read a book that sticks with you forever? That was this book for me. I read through it in a matter of days, and the tragic, beautiful, painful story has stuck with me. I carry it with me and I don’t regret it one bit. If you want to gain a lot of perspective, and appreciation for your life, read this book. It is beautifully written and entirely captivating.

Based on reviews, I expected a good book about a noble woman who altruistically takes care of AIDS orphans. Yes, it's that, but there was so much more depth and insight, and vastly superior writing than I had expected. This is not a hagiography. The author tells the story of this woman interspersed with information about AIDS (theories as to its origins, epidemiology statistics, the history of the development of medicines and their patents), and stories of families who've adopted Ethiopian orphans. She personalizes a catastrophe. She could inspire someone with no interest in small children (me) to (almost) want to adopt an orphan. What was most superb was how this story of this woman encompasses the strange turns lives can take. The Ethiopian woman, Haregewoin, didn't wake up one day and decide to open an orphanage. She was ready to effectively end her life due to grief over her daughter's death when a priest asked her to take care of one orphan, and that gave her a raison d'etre. This escalates into running a large orphanage and being pivotal in foreign adoptions. There are unexpected twists, even scandals, and an illustration of how no good deed goes unpunished. This story encapsulates the Internet's upside (intercontinental communication), and downside (misinformation spread so repetitively that it appears to be true). The most fascinating chapter was about Haregewoin's trip to the U.S. The most touching chapter was about an American couple taking their newly adopted two children to their birth village so they could see their grandfather before they left Ethiopia. After reading this, I find myself trying to picture 10% of everyone I know dying of AIDS. And having seven-year old girls taking care of their younger siblings, and having our best hope be that someone from China or Nigeria will swoop in to take the children off the sinking ship. That's very hard to picture, but that's the scenario depicted by this book.

This book is two stories side-by-side. One story is the very intimate portrayal of a woman who accidentally created an orphanage and found herself, for better or worse, knee-deep in an exploding and unrecognized crisis in Ethiopia. Things didn't always go well but she did the best she could with the tools she had and ultimately impacted the lives of many children (and adoptive parents!). The second story is the story of AIDS in Africa and the world's reaction to the crisis, and I guarantee that unless you have extensively studied on that subject you will be surprised and dismayed at what you learn. Definitely a must-read for every socially conscious human.

George Hayward was one of the most enigmatic explorers in the huge mass of other enigmatic explorers of Central Asia. From the time of the Mongol conquests, up through the current day, the geography, political makeup, and history of this area has been rife with con men, religious crackpots (of every stripe), political agenda-enhancers, and military despots. If the natives alone were not, in many cases, despicable enough, the European travelers, from Marco Polo to the most recent trekking hippies and druggies were often just as bad.One man, though, had no hidden agenda to pursue. He had no ulterior motives to accomplish, no desire to convert natives to Christianity, no reason make them subjects of a far-off sovereign. He only wanted to learn, to discover, to find things out. A lackluster military career prepared him for the rigors of mountain travel in the middle decades of the nineteenth century. Obsessed by the unknown and unmapped high Pamir mountains, westernmost bulwark of the continent-spanning Himalaya, Hayward explored Turkestan, far western China, and what is now the Northern Areas of Pakistan during the late 1860s. Imagine this area - where come together Russia, China, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. During the century-long "Great Game" between Britain and Russia, early explorers were often unwelcome visitors in the native areas. Internecine warfare was just as common then as now. Strangers were looked on as dangerous harbingers of outside meddling or control. Local rulers wanted no part of British or Russian spies.During a tragically short exploration career, George Hayward traversed much of the forbidden and unknown western Himalaya on foot, with barely a horse or tent to make the going easier. One of the few nineteenth century explorers explicitly sponsored by England's Royal Geographic Society, he tried to go where no (white) man had gone before. And all it did was get him murdered. Killed in a lonely wood dozens of miles from any settlement, the circumstances of his death are still murky, still unproven, and still a cause for wonder. However, thanks to this marvelous book by Mr Hannigan, many of the voids are filled in, many of the questions finally answered, and most of the conjecture laid to rest as incorrect, foolhardy, or just plain wrong.Official India didn't really want Hayward wandering around out past the frontier - even though his maps and surveying made known areas that were just "blank spots on the map" prior to his travels. They made it known that he was on his own, much as any Westerner clambering round the hills and caves of eastern Afghanistan (or Iran's border with Iraq) would be today. They especially didn't want to hear about the atrocities committed against neighboring clans by armies of the Maharajah of Kashmir, then a semi-autonomous kingdom anxiously coddled by British India as a buffer against perceived Russian encroachment across the Hindu Kush. Ignored by the officials, Heyward published an incendiary letter in the local papers accusing the Maharajah of slaughtering upwards of 200 men, women and children in an area west of Gilgit known as the Darkot Valley. He then rode right back into the area, almost daring the Maharajah's wrath. What happened, how it happened, and who may have been responsible, is the main subject of Hannigan's book. Many other volumes though the years have briefly touched on Hayward's career, but since his light flashed so briefly, and in all honesty, so inconsequentially, during the Great Game, he was relegated to little more than a few paragraphs here and there in much larger books. But Mr Hannigan has now filled that 'blank spot on the map' with his admirable, well-researched book that brings to life this formerly unknown character, and places the reader firmly in the saddle along with Heyward as he trudges up and down the cold, rocky ridges of the Himalaya, across waist-deep snow in passes over a dozen thousands of feet in elevation, and across dry, desolate deserts. You're with Heyward, and another early traveler, the tea planter Robert Shaw, as they're held in virtual captivity for months on end in a remote outpost of the Turkestan emir. You are there as Heyward's reports and surveys are presented to an astonished Royal Geographical Society, his named stamped on the Founder's Gold Medal even as he, thousands of miles away, rode inexorably onwards to his tragic destiny.I highly recommend this book to any devotee of Central Asian history, any lover of explorers and exploration, and indeed, anyone interested in events that could just as easily have happened last week rather than 140 years ago.

It's a shame Tim Hannigan's work isn't more widely distributed. History buffs and devotees of Asian geopolitics no doubt would be thoroughly taken with this tale of a self-made award-winning explorer whose tempestuous personality and unbendable will have made him a legend. But these same qualities also directly caused his untimely death in July, 1870. The British explorer George Hayward's story begins, ironically enough, with his dramatic end. It is told in wonderful detail, along with the history of the northwestern region of colonial India in the mid to late 19th century. Thoroughly researched and packed with information, this book is monumental. I picked up my paperback edition in Chennai, India and am so lucky I did.At 32, Hayward had already made great discoveries in what is now Pakistan and Turkestan and been well recognized by the Royal Geographical Society in London, but he wanted insanely to push on to the Pamirs, traveling across uncharted mountains and valleys infested with wild tribesmen preying on lone travelers. Naive, driven, brilliant, and an orphaned loner, Hayward is at the center of this book. Hannigan presents him as a pure charismatic genius, unable to stand still. His sole object was to get to the Pamirs, and no warnings or dangers were going to stop him. This was a time in the 19th century when many an eccentric went exploring into uncharted territories. Some were charlatans, others were running from someone or something, and still others enjoyed the power they held as Britishers over the "natives." Hayward was none of these. He was a purely focused, obsessed explorer, charged by the RGS to explore these northern regions, as the British were also obsessed with the possibility of Russia invading their jewel through these uncharted mountain passes. Hayward traveled harder and faster than anyone else, completely disregarding hardships, frostbite, and the complaints of his small crew of porters who accompanied him.If you have any interest in adventure and history (and enjoyed "Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer), I urge you to find a copy of this book. You will simply love it!

I bought Volume One and Volume Two for teaching beginning level ESL. Pictures are valuable aids, but the scenarios included use vocabulary dialog that is above the level I expected. I feel that I will need to white out many of the dialogs to prevent confusion. Additionally, some of the terms sound stilted or downright foreign to my California ears. Headache tablet? We would say pain medicine or pills. Creased. You mean wrinkled? Book a table. You mean make a reservation? Rang the insurance company. You mean you called them? I will make adjustments so that I don't make them sound like a space alien. I will most likely alter and use about 30% of this material.

I don't think that these are very helpful for teaching or learning English. I teach ESL to adults and I bought both volumes. I still haven't used one page from either book for any of my lessons.. Mainly because the books are comic strips without words. You have to have the students insert the dialogue. This could be a supplemental activity if you are following some type of curriculum book. This would be for someone who has developed a great vocabulary and wanting to get extra practice.

Loved this book! Clear, easily understandable, and geared toward the everday needs of new English language learners. Shopping, transportation, banking, household items, greetings, and so on. An extra plus: they use pictures of adults instead of children. It is difficult to find beginning materials not geared toward children. Was delivered on time, in excellent condtion. Highly recommend this seller.

very goodthink you

A great book to have in one's English book collection. Great for teaching English to students or adults at all ages. Easy. Simple. Good text and supporting images. Easy to follow.

helps w lesson ideas

Very helpful in trying to teach English

Like I said, the ESL students like this text and seem to enjoy learning from it with their teachers. It's is like level One not really a foundation text.

Review

My first laser back in 1986 was a 2.5 mW HeNe laser. It did not create any miracles in my dental clinic but the results were interesting enough to keep up my interest - in spite of the high price tag in those days. The years have passed and equipment for low level laser therapy has improved a lot, producing much higher power and new wavelengths. But still at a rather high price, especially if you want to have one for your private use. Meanwhile, laser pointers can be obtained at a very low cost; a red pointer of around 5 mW can be found for some 20-30 USD. Such sources of coherent light are by no means optimal but they do present an affordable option for self treatment of many medical conditions, especially for conditions in superficial tissues. The aim of the book Rejuvenation by Lawrence DelRe is to underline this fact and to bring attention to the possibilities of self treatment by laser pointers. The suggested therapies are based upon the author s own long-time experience. Some indications are rather speculative, others based upon scientific evidence. Nearly 300 references are listed at the end of the book. But in all cases the author underlines safety precautions in a responsible way. The medical risks with laser pointer in this power range are indeed minimal but whatever there is has to be emphasized, considering the fact that this book is aimed at a general public of laymen. The author also underlines that laser pointers are for self treatment no to treat others than yourself. Although the range of possibilities with laser pointers is somewhat limited, many individuals will find them surprisingly effective for several conditions. This in turn may generate more interest in professional laser therapy and eventually advance the frontiers of this fascinating medical tool. --Dr. Jan Tuner, co-author of the classic: Laser TherapyI am so pleased that Dr DelRe has published a book that will help ordinary people self-treat many common ailments in a safe, drug free way. His book is clearly written, contains many explanatory drawings and safe protocols, and gives practical insight for the therapies. It also contains some 290 scholarly references that can serve as starting points for those who wish to research further. Unfortunately, the laser pointer is illegal in the UK, but I believe that narrow band LED light should work just as well in these applications. A better discussion of the importance of correct wavelengths and light dispersion may have been helpful. --mike, mwk; (UK)After a cursory reading of Dr. DelRe's book, I heeded the advice he proffers for neuropathy and took grape seed extract. Right away the numbness and tingling that I had in my foot for a half year started to go away. Being amazed, I then did the other thing the doctor suggested -- drink green tea. My symptoms continued to diminish. (Both grape seed extract and the green tea have bioflavonoids, of which my body was evidently deficient.) Being right on two counts, he had won my confidence and he was probably going to be right about coherent light -- what his book is all about -- so I bought an infrared heating device on the Web for about thirty dollars and gave coherent light a try. After just one application of ten minutes, the symptoms diminished considerably, and again right away. My next treatment is in a couple of days. (As with all the many maladies for which coherent light is effective, the treatment should be done only twice per week.) When my symptoms completely disappear, I'll write a follow-up. Guessing, I should say that they will be gone within a month. --Tom McGann

From the Inside Flap

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING I started using a small laser pointer on my hip and gluteal region where I have a chronic muscle spasm. The laser pointer reduced the spasm and the pain signi?cantly. Because the laser pointer brings down muscle spasms it also seems to reduce the pain that radiates down my leg. There are times when the pain is so bad that I can't sleep but then I use the laser pointer and it brings the pain level down enough that I'm able to sleep. It really has changed my life.—Kristina Muhl, R.N.How absolutely great this is! I su?ered from a crippling in?ammation of the tissue in my right hand, wrist, and forearm which made it di?cult to perform certain aspects of my job. Over the course of several months I was able to see appreciable relief in my symptoms. I am now back to 100% functionality and able to perform my duties with no issues. If I feel occasional twinges of pain, I use a laser pointer at home for treatments on myself which are very e?ective. I also su?er from diabetic neuropathy in both feet. I have experienced a signi?cant improvement in sensation, and I feel laser therapy has helped delay its progression.—Mary Frances Richard, R.N.After several days of self treatment my pain not only subsided, but I haven't had the same severity since. I now use my laser pointer whenever I feel pain in my body at almost any site. At 62 years of age I ?nd I now feel better than when I did when I was working. I am able to keep any pain and discomfort under control with my laser pointer.—Mary Causey, Pittsburgh Police Detective, (retired) Former Cardiopulmonary Technologist I was skeptical. However, I read Rejuvenation and applied Dr. DelRe's techniques on my sore rotator cuff. To my surprise I felt better and the results lasted. Dr. DelRe presents techniques that work with clarity and con?dence. Rejuvenation illustrates simple techniques using light therapy and how to apply them with detailed elegance.— Allen D'Angelo M.S.My first laser back in 1986 was a 2.5 mW HeNe laser. Len: What is your problem? Joan: I am a diabetic and I have thyroid problems. I have diabetic neuropathy, (numbness,) in my feet.Len: How did the laser pointer work for you? Joan: At first it didn't do anything. After a couple of weeks, I increased the dosage to 5 minutes per surface. In about a month the shooting pains in my toes went away and I could walk better. After about 6 weeks, I became distracted and quit using my laser pointer. Some time later the pains came back and I realized I hadn't been using the laser pointer, so I started up again.Len: In your case, do you think it was the laser pointer, or something else in your life that gave you relief in the feet? Joan: I think it was the laser pointer. I didn't change anything else.Len: On a scale of 1-100, how much relief did you get? Joan: About 80% relief. The toes still feel like there's numbness there, but the shooting pain has lessened.—Joan Preston, Diabetic

At least 8 years old. In bad need of updating. Originally printed in color, the drawings now printed in black/white/gray scale do not show up well. Obviously printed to reduce his cost. Chiropractors should practice their bone cracker art and find a Writer to write their books. A good writer. Minimal clarity, badly lacking in defining terms. I'm sorry, I could not read Larry's mind. Could have been greatly improved by just filling in Who What Why Where How and How Much in each Section. Left a lot out. Having demurred on How the information was presented, there appears to be value here for treating many physical problems with "the power of light". There are some weak instructions on where/what lasers to buy and the writer needs to update this as products have obviously changed since 2008 when this was being written. Likely not a Mathematician, his instructions for power and time of the laser treatments are, in a word, poor. While writing for an international audience, he leaves us English unit users scrambling for calculators and joule to Watt power converters. You OK with treating your body using joules per cubic centimeter with a maximum treatment of 2.0 joules? He also uses examples with a 100 milliWatt red laser but recommends you procure a 5 mW pointer. Just bought a laser and will try it out and provide an update.

First thing is: I don't trust reviews on Amazon or many other places. People are not critical enough in this "feel good" culture we live in. So I'll cut to the chase: I have lots of inflammation and have been looking for help. I have been using cold laser therapy for 3 weeks and so far so good. The best way I can describe it is that it has a sedative effect on angry tissues. His book gives you a history and overview and a deep understanding that money and medicine most of the time do not mix. This therapy is inexpensive relatively speaking, but the reason you don't hear about it is doctors cant get rich healing people with it. But that doesnt mean it is not effective. Most of the book is instructions on how to use it with various inflammatory maladies.....some you will be able to relate to. His writing is detailed but not complicated. Keep an open mind to this technology. Most of us have tried too many things that do not work.

I really enjoyed reading the detailed explanations, facts, and backup informaton provided about using laser light to heal. I tried it on myself with a silly little red laser pointer I use for playing with the cat, and experienced about a 15% improvement in a damaged ankle (damaged and painful since 2012) within a few days. I am hoping for more improvement as time goes on. My sister has also been using it for some pain she has, and has experienced the same. Progressive improvement. The book is well written, provides plenty of resources and proof, and hands on techniques for dealing with various types of pain and illness. I would love to see it expanded even more to include additional uses of the laser pointer, and I'm now shopping around for a new more powerful laser.

I purchased my laser lights from laserlift a seller here on amazon and have been seeking additional materials in which to enhance my use of the lights and fiber optic cables. When i read the highlights and review of rejuvenation i made the decision to purchase. It has quickly become one of my prime reference guides for the use of my laser pen. Also made it much easier to share with friends the importance of using a laser for wellness. I hope Dr. Delre will quickly do a version 2 to cover more suggested remedies using simple laser lights. To add to successful use of the book a friend had a sinus headache due to congestion from a cold. I followed the suggestion for use of the laser for sinus conditions and within minutes her head ache dissipated and began to breath better. Highly recommended reading....Doctors 532 nm green laser they have the red one as well.

I've told a lot of friends and family about your book, and all of them are getting results. After a painful tooth extraction last year I used it to treat my swollen gums at the incision point, and when I followed up with my general dentist 3 weeks later they were in total disbelief about how fast it healed, commenting they had never seen anyone's gums heal that soon. I made no mention I even used a laser until after they mentioned this to me. I also like your idea of using preventative measures and treating my gum line where the roots of teeth are. I've been treating the teeth themselves in the past, didn't realize I need to treat the root area through the gums.Anyway, thanks again for such an eye-opening, concise book. I feel a laser pointer should be in every medicine cabinet.

Very informative book...one of the only books out there about using light therapy (not related to expensive equipment).I like that he includes safety considerations and he writes in easy terminology so it's not complicated to understand. When I got this book, I felt as if I had stumbled across a jewel! I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about light therapy and considering self-care.

The healing power of light energy has been used in many countries overseas for.years, and is finallybeing incorporated by physicians in this country since laser therapy has been cleared by the FDA in 2002.Unfortunately, however, it is difficult to find clinicians who use Class IV laserregularly to treat the many conditions it has proven to be efficacious for. Dr. DelRehas provided patients with a simple to understand text, which will provide them with the rudimentaryknowledge and skill to apply this fascinating healing science to their own problems.Edwin F Barry, DC, DABCO

It was recommended to us. I find it easy to understand and has answered the questions I mayhave had. I'm going to need two more but is somewhat expensive when your buying for2 other people. Would like to find soft cover at little less money.I will be buying 2 more Tendlite's.Donna

Amazon.com Review

The moral of this book is that behind every great engineering success is a trail of often ignored (but frequently spectacular) engineering failures. Petroski covers many of the best known examples of well-intentioned but ultimately failed design in action -- the galloping Tacoma Narrows Bridge (which you've probably seen tossing cars willy-nilly in the famous black-and-white footage), the collapse of the Kansas City Hyatt Regency Hotel walkways -- and many lesser known but equally informative examples. The line of reasoning Petroski develops in this book were later formalized into his quasi-Darwinian model of technological evolution in The Evolution of Useful Things, but this book is arguably the more illuminating -- and defintely the more enjoyable -- of these two titles. Highly recommended.

This little gem is an analysis of engineering failures, and the learning that occurs due to these failures. While he is himself a professor of engineering, Petroski uses language comprehensible to the layman making this book accessible to almost anyone. During the course of the book he argues that engineering is part art and part science, and that as a discipline engineers focus on building safe, affordable, and reliable things (from paper clips to airliners) to meet a set of requirements. He goes on to elaborate that, being human, engineers make errors and sometimes spectacular failures ensue. The key, he argues, is that once errors are exposed, engineers can glean knowledge from those problems to improve future designs. He uses accessible examples that most people can readily relate to, from researching failure modes on one of his son's toys (the components used most frequently failed first, just like a frequently used light bulb burns out more quickly due to metal fatigue and subsequent cracking), to the deadly collapse of the Kansas City Hyatt Regency Hotel walkways, which killed over 100 people. He also discusses easy to comprehend failures (suspension bridges in strong wind), and more intricate interactions, such as was revealed in the Chicago DC-10 accident. Throughout, he retains an aura of good humor and approachability, which makes this book far more readable than most books in this field. My only complaint about the book is not even the fault of Mr. Petroski at all: the font in the book is very small, and combined with small borders, the book is a bit tough to physically read. Small matter, though, as once you start the book, you will not want to put it down. Well done.

This is an excellent study of how seemingly excellent designs can result in catastrophic failures. The explanations are clear and not so long as to be overwhelmingly. For any professional in the human factors and/or human engineering profession who deals in root cause and accident analyses, it should be a must. It does require some slow and careful reading by a non-engineer (like me) but still provides a clear picture of "how the heck could that have happened?" Actually, this is my second time to purchase this book; the second copy was a gift to a friend.

The book by Henry Petroski taught me important notions: designs constantly evolve to structures bigger, more elegant, more efficient, more economical. And this innovation always involves risk because the changes carry with it conflicting demands of safety factors versus economic considerations. Failure must be anticipated and successful design owns more to failure than success. He correctly points out that failure is also linked to our humanness. His citation of George Santayana is a great final thought: "We must welcome the future, remembering tha soon it will be past; and we must respect the past, knowing that once it was all that was humanly possible."

As a high school mathematics teacher (50 years) with an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering and a master's degree in mathematics I have applied engineering principles to the art of teaching students. Petroski's book is most readable and enlightening. My wife, an artist and former English teacher, also enjoyed the book. I have given copies to students (including our granddaughter) considering engineering as a career, and to fellow teachers.

I have purchased about a half dozen over the past years since it was written.....It is NOT intended for only engineers, but I have found that having engineers read it makes them far more aware of what they are supposed to be doing.

I am not really sure how I came across this book. I think it was by following relevant links on Amazon. Anyway I bought this as well as The Evolution of Useful Things at the same time. I found this a very insightful reading in light of my occupation as a software engineer. Several of my coworkers recently had an email conversation regarding the quailty of software engineered products vs. "real" engineer's and their feats of construction, bridges, airplanes and buildings all things that Petroski covers in details. Some additional thoughts on how structural engineering is different from Enterprise Application Software Engineering:1. --In general software is unlimited, where as Structural Engineering has natural laws. Higher level Patterns are pretty constant, where as within the created construct of software they are reinvited (Object Patterns, EJB Patterns)2. --structures have the added requirement of no death, where as Enterprise Software only has revenue associated with it, not as powerful a motivator as death.3. --software is interactive with behavior, where as a bridge is a bridge[...]

fantastic book for fellow engineers or anybody really! interesting read.

Every engineer needs to understand the thee of this book -- many do not. Non-engineers will be shocked and astonished at the role of failure in the design process.

Henry Petroski is a highly respected professor and author writing about the failures of bridges, buildings and similar civil engineering works. Engineering design is a noble profession. It brings us many great and useful technologies. But, engineering has its limits. Unfortunately, limits may be difficult to see in advance of catastrophic failure. This book reminds us that we must never stop improving our methods of design both from technological as well as human perspectives. It is a classic on engineering design and failure and every engineer should read it.

Breathing Space: A Spiritual Journey in the South Bronx

Review

With its hard-nosed realism and passion for God, this memoir should appeal to people of faith across the political spectrum.--Publishers Weekly (starred review)"Surrounded by violence and poverty and threatened by urban renewal, Transfiguration Lutheran Church under pastor Neumark survived and, perhaps miraculously, thrived . . . Her story proves genuinely inspirational as we follow her from despair and frustration to cautious optimism in the face of a still tenuous future." --Booklist"Breathing Space is a beautifully produced book, and it has a utopian poignancy . . . Yet it is grounded in the virtue of hope."--James S. Torrens, America: The National Catholic WeeklyWinner of a 2004 Wilbur Award

A very good read. The author has the ability to convey her story in an interesting and engaging manner. I laughed and cried reading this book. It was insightful reading the author's thoughts, fears, hopes and dreams for her ministry.

I am loving this book. I picked it up as part of preparing a sermon for Transfiguration Sunday. The sermon is yet to be written, but I know that the book will be influential. Thank you Pastor Neumark for your masterful writing and your courageous example.

I enjoyed this easy read as I journeyed with Heidi Neumark in the South Bronx. Inspiring stories and life changing stories of how to preach the grace, mercy, and love of God in a place torn apart by violence. You will want to buy this book!

As a member of Transfiguration during this period of time, I took a beautiful trip down memory lane! Thanks Pastor Heidi!!

This is one brave woman in a compelling story of fulfilling God's mission.

I learned so much from this book. It made me think differently about the challenges of living in urban areas and the joys to be found in all of God's world amongst His people.

This book brought up serious subjects about the inner city. Also, the pressure on citizens. The importance of faith in our lives.

Neumark is authentic, yet hopeful in her description of what it's like to do ministry in a depressed urban area. She's a great writer and a humble, compassionate person.

This book will resound well with those infused with passion, teaching them about this feeling and how to recognize it, temper it, and cultivate it effectively without giving it vent to consume us. There are parts where personally it was difficult to face truths about my own passions. Brad and Steve are prime coaches for dealing with these at times harrowing discoveries. All told, a masterful look at an aspect needed in very healthy doses in today's world. Bravo, gentlemen!

I had this book on my radar after thoroughly enjoying Peak Performance. The authors have created another excellent work here. The research and advice that they present is very insightful and is unlike other books I’ve read on high performance and single-minded pursuits of excellence. The prose is very clean and direct. There is something here for everybody, no matter where your interests lie.

Practical examples, tips, practices and snips of great, solid, masterfully written information.

I feel comfortable recommending this little book more for it being a trigger to make one think than any specific advice it gives. Don’t get me wrong. There is specific advice and it’s worthwhile but we’re in a one size never fits all situation where thinking of what the authors’ research has turned up will likely improve your thinking about dedication to task (or career or anything) more than the specifics of what’s worked well for others or what the authors view as general case recommendations. The book starts out with the ‘famous folks who’ve done this’ routine which tends to put my fur up. It’s a variant of the “defer to authority” fallacy. Soon, however, they leave a good deal of that behind and instead go into the meat of the book which tries to advise on how to live a balanced goal oriented life. The key is not just balance but what to focus on as a goal. Do you wish an Olympic gold medal? The key may be not to focus on being on the podium but something else. Not surprisingly, the book is oriented toward athletics which makes sense. After all, that’s where even common weekend athletes wish to improve to the point of excelling. The book reads well – the authors know how to write with an upbeat faster pace which squeezes all the filler and/or boring pointless diatribes. I laughed out loud (at the doctor’s office!) at the authors pointing out what the Buddha called the hedonic cycle. That one sentence is worth the cost of the book as well as the time to read it. I will remember it forever.

Written by coaches and trainers Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness, The Passion Paradox is a self-help book that explores, as the title indicates, the double-edged sword of passion: It can be a great motivator, but it can be a dead-end leading to burnout, delusions, and escapism. How does one harness passion effectively? How does one balance passion with discipline and structure? What is the difference between passion based on the ego’s insecurities and passion based on the intrinsic joy of one’s craft? The author’s explore these questions in an easy-to-read self-help format with a review section at the end of each chapter. In this book you will find the etymology of passion in terms of its historical meaning in religion, its biological foundation (dopamine), and its correct application in the context of self-determination theory, as presented by psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan. Those looking to hone their passion for their career, art, or other endeavors will find this a very useful and meaningful book. I recommend as a supplement to The Paradox Passion two books by Cal Newport: So Good They Can’t Ignore You and Deep Work.

To me this book is full of common sense because it has been the way I conduct my life since youth. I found this more of a reminder of how passion can be either fulfilling or destructive. The reminders in the margins are excellent and the conclusion chapter is really what the book is about in two-pages.EXAMPLES of REMINDERS:- "The best route to making your passion a bigger part of your life is to do so gradually."- "Someone who embodies the mastery mind-set judges herself not on whether she accomplishes her goal but rather on how well she executes on her process."MY UNDERSTANDING:The sentences below sums up what this book is to me and not necessarily what was exactly said or meant in the text:- Pursuing an interest and becoming a successful master (or mistress) requires being intrinsically motivated to achieve results rather than being externally motivated on reaching the goal. In other words, satisfaction and passion must come from within otherwise it can become toxic.- One must be self-aware and re-evaluate their passion.- Pursuing a passion means life is unbalanced by default but if we look at our entire life as a whole, we are usually balanced.- We must be patient and keep striving toward our passion to achieve success.- Some of us may have many passions and choose to re-evaluate where we are at different times in our lives so as to re-direct our passions.- What helps us to achieve the life we want is to think about death, This helps us realize there is only so much time that we have so we should be doing what moves us.- There is a fine line between passion and obsession. In summary, this felt like a pep-talk and a reminder of how I already live. I was not personally enlightened although I did appreciate the inspiring notes in the margin.

Most books tell you to follow your passion. the money will follow. this book urges caution in following your passion as it often results in the elimination of everything else of importance in your life. IT cautions us against being obsessive and alerts us to the role fear plays in our life.In a world whereto are measured by your successes, this book gives you a few moments of trying to have a balanced life and not live your life on the need for the renewal of the feelings of dopamine the we get during the chase.I read it in doctors' offices and in transit and found it helpful and clarifying. I recommend it.
