In this beautifully written and illustrated simple text, readers are drawn into the mysticism of Hildegard that has much to offer contemporary spirituality. While it is ideal for sharing with young children, adults as well can find room for contemplation in this lovely sharing of a gifted woman's faith experience.

This is a great book to use in the music classroom. My students love learning about people in history that made beautiful music!

Given as a confirmation gift, "Secret World" passed a fairly high bar. I particularly appreciated how the text moved from a simplistic, childlike description of Hildegard's early life to the complex and beautifully satisfying account of her mature work. The woodcuts were marvelous.

Lovely book for my granddaughter's report on Hildegard.

Both pictures and words are delightful and work well together. This is one of the best children's books about Christian saints that I have ever seen. As a hagiologist (a person who studies saints) I have seen a number, and most are both poor and male dominated. This is neither. Furthermore, with 35 saints in the Roman Catholic category of Doctors of the Church [as in Teachers, like getting a doctorate], and only 4 of those being women, it is very nice to see this book about one of them. This is good for pre-readers and early readers.

I would reccommend this for a gift to a young person who appreciates current fantasies of a simliar age. It may lead to a deeperknowing of fantastic events which occur in unexplained ways, yet have a claim to aur\thenticiry. ...Tom Conlon

It was during the Middle Ages when everything seemed so dark gray and dreary. Little girls were not allowed to attend school and never learned to read. Little Hildegard was a very strange and unusual girl. When she was only three years old she began to predict things. This frightened her parents very much. She often claimed her head hurt and she said she saw "flames and stars."It wasn't long after this she was sent away to a monastery. It had beautiful gardens, but her stone room was barren and unwelcoming, yet there was someone there who would help her. Jutta, a nun, taught her to read and do many things. Much later on when Hildegard grew up, she was elected "Mistress," as she was so beloved in the monastery. Eventually she dictated her visions, which she claimed came from God. She wrote music, wrote about medicine, entire languages and more. Eventually she presented a book to the Pope. She was modest and said simply, "I am just a feather on the breath of God."This is a marvelous story, told with poetic simplicity. Hildegard von Bingen was what people called today a "mystic visionary," or prophet. The art work is beautiful . . . acrylic and pen on Arches watercolor paper. There are a brief biography and bibliography in the back of the book. Hildegard was a multi talented woman that many young people would want to acquaint themselves within the pages of this book!

I don't usually give a review, but I couldn't let anyone hoping to learn about 'women warrior's to waste their money on this. The writing is so disjointed and fragmented it is difficult to know at times what she is even saying. The footnotes could make another book. The woman she lists are rarely mentioned. Don't bother.

This is a wonderful work of history, written to be accessible to a wide range of readers and packed with fascinating people you've probably never heard of but really should know.

I admit, when I ordered this book, I was just expecting a collection of easy to read biographies of "women warriors" like Joan of Arc. Something typically written for teenage/young girls to show them "You can do whatever you want to do!"This is not that book. (And it made me chuckle in the introduction when the author flat out states that most books about women warriors is a selection of biographies written for young girls and this is not that book.)Happily, it is a much more interesting and in depth book on women's history in war, battles, sieges, etc. through history. It is written as an academic text in a sociological, anthropological, women's studies vein, though it is very accessible to lay people. The book is divided into chapters about different aspects of women in war, women's role in war in relation to their families (either children or parents or husbands), women leading battles, woman manning the ramparts/holding the fort during a siege. After an introduction in the chapter about about the broader theme, Toler provides three case studies of women warriors that make her case. The cases are quite diverse both in historical eras, race, ethnicity, wealth, etc.I enjoyed this book a lot. I liked that it is written in a academic style, providing analysis on the general themes, examining the women's actions in relation to traditional gender roles at the time (and sometimes how men get caught up in these fights because the person on the other side is "just a woman"), in addition to providing interesting biographies on many fascinating and not terribly famous woman. She also discusses why these women aren't well known, often noting that history is often written by men and it is often shameful to lose to a woman. Of course there are other cases, where the woman becomes historically celebrated or a national heroine (Boudica, Joan of Arc, Artemisia) used as a symbol in later fights (often for independence from a colonial power.)One thing I really liked about this book is that Toler doesn't sugar coat the brutal actions some of the women take, from turning skulls into wine goblets or being willing to let the enemies kill their children (in one case, when the enemies threatened to kill her child if she didn't surrender, one woman pulled up her skirt and pointed and said she could always make more. Not quite the maternal snuggliness we expect from women.)One minor annoyance I had was the number of footnotes. There are tons of them and they are long and I found it disruptive to the prose to constantly be looking at the bottom of the page and reading something else. Of course on the bright side, I don't normally read footnotes, but Toler's were very interesting and occasionally humorous (she has a dry wit) so I always checked out the notes but then would have to jump back and try to re-find my place. I go back and forth wishing they were end notes (which I definitely wouldn't read) to wishing maybe she just scaled back on the number. It's just a personal preference, I guess.Overall, an interesting, well written, grown up book on women in combat/war. I gladly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about women warriors (and not just simplified biographies to boost girls' self-esteem.)

And if you're looking for a good work of fiction about women at war, pick up Rita Mae Brown's delightful novel, "High Hearts" about a woman who disguises herself as a man to fight aside her husband in the Civil War.

I had to get this book for my BIO 20B class. At first I thought it was just another boring textbook that the professors make you read. But I decided to get the book on a limb. After reading the first four chapters, I fell in love with the book.The author really tries to make the topic, plants interesting, by describing ideas and facts about plants in an interesting and memorable way, and also informs the reader about the wonderful world of plants

I love this book. It is very scientific so it could be hard to read if you are not into that type of book. I think it portrays an idea about plants that many people have never considered. I gave this book to someone else after I was done because I enjoyed it so much.

Publishers can usually get some English-language scientist to write a tome on the latest discoveries in a more commercially agreeable manner than putting together a translation. So when the translation appears you know the book is good and/or original in a distinctive way.In Praise of Plants by botany Professor Emeritus Francis Hallé of the University of Montpellier, France is such a book. However it is by no means a popular treatise; indeed, if you want to get the look and feel of a botany article in a professional journal, this book provides an entire book's worth! The material is technical, detailed, and uncompromisingly professional.So why has the Timber Press chosen this volume to bring to the English speaking world? Partly because of the international prestige of Hallé, who is an expert on tropical plants; partly because they were able to get a translation by David Lee who is Professor of Biological Sciences at Florida International University; and partly because of the striking nature of Hallé's presentation.Hallé emphasizes the form of plants and how that form has developed evolutionarily from their need to secure the services of both sun and earth while remaining nearly immobile. There are dozens of line drawings in the book, most by Hallé himself, illustrating the differences between plants and animals with the text explaining why these differences occur. For example, because plants are sessile (attached to the ground) they are symmetrical on the horizontal plane, a tree looking pretty much the same from whatever spot on the ground you view it. However in a vertical sense a plant is very different since its crown is in the air looking at the sun while its roots are in the ground looking for water and minerals. In contrast, animals (I'll just quote Hallé so you'll get a feel for the technical language): "have dorsiventral polarity and anteroposterior and bilateral symmetry." (p. 70)Fortunately the attractive and sometimes funny drawings help to penetrate the language for this amateur!Here are some examples of the sort of things you can learn from this book:At the microscopic level, where gravity is relatively "negligible compared to other forces" like "surface tension, viscosity, friction and Brownian motion," (p. 64) life forms tend toward the round and take on the symmetries we associate with astronomical objects like the sun and Saturn. Hallé gives examples of bacteria, amoebas, diatoms, etc. where "vertical polarity simply does not exist." (p. 64) Science fiction writers take note: creatures living in interstellar dust clouds will be more or less round.One of the clear homologies (same form) assumed by plants and animals is in "the external (assimilating) surface of a plant and the internal (digestive) surface of an animal." (p. 51) The plant maximizes its surface area to expose as much of it as possible to the sun and the air, while the animal creates folds and such within its alimentary canal so as to provide a large surface area for effective digestion. Hallé notes that plants resemble fractals externally. (p. 52)The waste products of animals bring forth (to our sensitivities) malodorous compounds as do their decomposing bodies. Hallé explains why this is so on pages 148-151, and why the waste products of plants and their decomposing bodies do not usually offend us; indeed the smell of new mown hay and forest humus or even a compost pile, can be very agreeable. On page 149 he favors us with a drawing of a tree which grows in part upon the waste products of its metabolism stored in its trunk. Next to the tree Hallé has a dog on top of a pile of its excrement, noting that "An animal that stored its excrement would also be capable of becoming very tall."Hallé's love of plants and his deep respect for them, and his life-long experience in studying them comes through most wonderfully in this fine book. Although technical, it is accessible to amateur botanists and just plain old gardeners and lovers of plants with just a little effort.

Here at last is a biologist who sees plants for the amazing things they are and not just as something like stationary green animals.Of the living things that we can see, plants make up the overwhelmingly greater part. They create the grasslands and forests and wetlands and the surface ocean conditions in which most animals live, they stabilize the atmosphere of the whole planet, and they are the ultimate source of almost everything that animals feed on. Yet biology, until its recent lurch into molecular studies, has mostly derived from animal models. Hallé cites many examples, such as the fruitless search for plant hormones and the extension to plants of the doctrine that the lineage of reproductive cells is strictly separate from that of the cells that make up the body of the organism.Hallé writes with clarity and gives plenty of concrete examples. He is someone who can decidedly 'see the wood for the trees' - not surprising perhaps in the man who pioneered the exploration of the rainforest canopy using 'rafts' suspended from balloons. He is also often very funny, and the translator has served him well. Hallé has illustrated the book with a large number of his own wonderful drawings. The work is beautifully produced - a gem from every point of view!

I have read 10 books by Ava March (including this one) and I found "All In with the Duke" to be amazingly lackluster in terms of story content especially when compared to her previous works. Reading the Kindle version, it was around 47% when I began to wonder when, or if, this story was going to progress further than just a mutual sexual attraction for each other. At this point, the prologue piqued my interest more than the ensuing tale. I had difficulty accepting that either character fell "in love" with the other considering the fact that when they were not in bed, for the most part, they spent little to no time together getting to know each other; indeed, Max, the Duke, spent all day working on estate matters in his study as well as many evening hours there, only joining up with Tristan for a nightly romp in bed. This is a foundation for love?Their separation seemed fabricated - a reason to provide the necessary angst required in romance books but, unfortunately, it was a little too late and a little too bland, for me to buy into it.Had this been my first Ava March book, I am rather sure I would not buy another one but, having enjoyed most of her previous books, I will, in all probability, buy her next one - and see where that one goes.A 2.5 star rating rounded up to 3 stars.

This is where he meets Tristan, 21, male prostitute. Behind the twin red doors, Max can indulge his wants and needs. Tristan doesn't want to be there, but is bound by debt. Max is quite pleased with Tristan and goes back again. We like these men and even more when we learn about them. Max saves Tristan from a man with heavy fists, and a bargain is struck.Tristan goes to Max's country Manor house to be free during the day, and in Max's bed at night. These two are hot, wicked and open in their bedroom romps, with occasional BDSM. They are sexy, giving, and very exciting together. They have some communication issues, but there isn't outside concerns or cheating, but the simple problems that come with getting together and figuring out futures. On the anniversary of Max's Dad's death, his big truth is told and Tristan comforts him.Feelings have grown, a challenge for Max, and a request by Tristan.We see them struggle with their inner thoughts and desires.This is a lovely low key tale of two men who need each other. Marvelous writing, and we get the nuances of the era.Highly recommend. ENJOY !==============

I've discovered that reading a book by Ava March is synonymous with utterly emotional, passionate and sexy as all hell. All in with the Duke is no exception. I fell completely in love with the characters on their journey from lust to love. Ms. March's writing style is beyond excellent and makes this a complete pleasure to read.Max Arrington, the Duke of Pelham has been hurt by an ex-lover and has vowed to never let such a thing happen again. But, he's lonely and wants the comfort of another man to warm his bed, so he takes the advice of a close friend and visits a brothel where he is introduced to Tristan Walsh.Tristan has accumulated gambling debts and the madam of the brothel has agreed to settle his debts if in returns he continues to work for her. He doesn't enjoy this life-style, just deals with it to get by. It's better than living on the streets. But, the night he meets his new client, Max, he never imagined this incredibly giving lover could change his life for the better.After a disagreeable incident at the brothel, Max whisks Tristan away to his country estate where he installs him in a position as his "mistress" more or less. He makes it plain to Tristan that he's not looking for love or any tender sentiments. Their relationship is to be mutually beneficial as long as they keep that relationship strictly to pleasuring each other in the bedroom.However, as time passes Tristan's feelings toward Max grow into something more. Something he didn't expect when he agreed to this arrangement. He discovers that he's fallen in love with Max. In doing so, he's broken the contract between them. Max doesn't want love between them, but Tristan doesn't think he can continue living without it. So, Tristan has to make a decision that may end their relationship forever, unless the stubborn or rather "determined" Max can change Tristan's mind.The tender moments between these two men were a complete pleasure to read. Each scene was written with emotion and passion, compelling me to keep turning the pages to find out if Max and Tristan would get to that forever that they both desired. I especially like that these books are set during the Regency era, which is probably one of my favorite time periods. If you're interested in m/m historical erotic romance then Ava March is for you!

I was very anxious to read this story and pre ordered the minute I found out Ava March had another release soon and I think I've read all her m/m works so when I received it on my kindle tonight, I immediately read it n did not put it down until I finished a few minutes ago! Most of the story I enjoyed. Max and Tristan were so wonderful together and I particularly loved Max protectiveness over Tristan, sigh! I do think Max was a bit too young and acted older than 23 and though it's explained, I still think he should have been older. Anyway the reason I knocked a star is the last 2/3 chapters were a disappointment. I do not like it when the only things keeping the heroes apart is oneself (a pattern seen in a lot of her works unfortunately). Tristan put up too much resistant for too long and not to mention, I'm not a fan of contradictory behavior. Overall though, an enjoyable read. On a side note, I hope Rawlings gets his own story!

Some interesting Content, (especially the theory about attention 0n pages 25-30) but Publisher did a bad job. 534 page paperback with small inner margins makes it hard to read the print near the binding. The notes in the back are about a size 8 font. The spacing between lines is minimal, All these combine to make reading potentially difficult . Also printed on cheap (high acid content) paper, which will yellow eventually. A shameful job by a University press. Interesting books like this deserve much better. This is not rocket science. It shows a real lack of respect for the author, the material, and the readers. The publishing deserves a Zero. If interested author also is on Utube.

I read the first chapter and was intrigued. By the time I got to the end, I was exhausted and completely turned off. In between, the same basic idea -- about two incompatible ways of looking at the world, which sometimes cooperate with each other and at other times compete for control inside our crania -- is stated at least 2 or 3 or more times on every page, well over a thousand times in all.Chapter Two alone is a formidable challenge to wade through -- 60 mind-numbing pages of references to neuropsychological studies piled one on top of another, footnoted with more than 500 citations!The author never lets up for even a moment, hammering away at it single-mindedly, browbeating the reader's frontal lobes into submission, until the idea is forced to carry so much weight that it sinks in a sea of cherry-picked data -- he never even mentions the "default mode network" hypothesis! -- and portentous quotations. Archenemy #1 (Descartes), then Hegel, Schlegel, Heidegger, Wittgenstein, Shklovsky, Kleist, Goethe, Nietzsche, and a host of other arbitrarily selected bit players (mostly Teutonic) are dragged on and off stage as needed to prop up the Argument and thicken the ideological plot against the human race, which appears doomed, until the final 10 pages when, like a deus ex machina, the Oriental mind suddenly appears out of the wings, offering us the hope of Salvation.Some of it is interesting, and maybe even true, at least as a metaphor, but McGilchrist just doesn't know when to quit, and soon your eyes begin to glaze over and you start to skim the page, then skip whole pages, and finally both hemispheres just nod off into a stupor.

I give this book 5 stars because it is utterly engrossing, well argued, expansively researched and I could not put it down. There is cutting edge neuroscience, vast historical, artistic, philosophical and literary discussions. An enormous argument based on the neuroscience of the right and left brain hemispheres and their effects on Western history and its development. There are ideas and concepts I learned which I most likely never would have been exposed to.I will conclude this part of my review with a hearty recommendation for reading this book and I say that you open your mind and go on the journey. There is time for thinking about it afterwards. Though I give this book 5 stars, it does not mean I have no reactions.McGilchrist is tireless with his argument of the left hemisphere dominating the right to such an extent that you feel exhausted by the end of the book. He makes it clear that he desires a balance of the two hemispheres, yet you can loose that point during his arguments. I do wish he had discussed more the dangers of right hemisphere dominance. Indeed, The Renaissance's open minded worldliness led down some murderous pathways. Nietzsche is quoted many times to support his arguments of Western Civilization's dominance by left hemisphere rationality and abstract thinking and indeed the critique is very much in line with Nietzsche's views. McGilchrist and Nietzsche both see Western civilization going off the rails because of Plato and only going back on the rails with the Renaissance and then going back off with the Reformation and Enlightenment. Nietzsche's condemnation of other- worldly rationality is given a specific place in the brain-the left hemisphere. Those Platonic Forms and the argument that truth is only found through rationality, McGilchrist says is the left hemisphere's poison which rolls through Western history. A stunning neuroscientific backing of Nietzsche. Yet, Nietzsche's philosophical overview can break down in the cold objective view of hemispheric brain science and actual history. McGilchrist's hammering of the nasty left hemisphere's dominance of history, sounds like McGilchrist's own left hemisphere going off the rails. I think Nietzsche would have told him to calm down a bit, and that is saying a lot, indeed. McGilchrist's view on religion is fascinating. He understandably leaves out Nietzsche's complete condemnation of all things Christian and wades in. The Protestants are condemned as destroying the Renaissance,(Nietzsche agrees) by bringing back a rational word based left hemisphere religion which assaults the intuitive and metaphorical Catholics. The Catholic church can be comforted that McGilchrist says they are more right hemisphere based than the fundamentalist Protestants who are left hemisphere based, yet will priests find comfort looking out at a flock who are there to buff up their right hemispheres'? The idea that Catholicism is good for brain hemisphere balance is interesting but may not be taken up by the Vatican just yet. There are more things to say, but as Nietzsche wrote:"Follow you, not me". Read this amazing book and think your own thoughts.

Few books have stuck with me to the extent that this book has. I keep reading and re-reading passages, trying to absorb it in layers rather than in one fell swoop. It's dense going but so utterly fascinating that I took it with me on a recent trip to Morocco. Long flight but it kept me engaged even though I was exhausted en route. I read the book a while ago and am glad to see they've made a documentary about Iain McGilchrist based on the concepts laid out in this book. You'll never see yourself, your world or history in the same way.

I am seated on the floor of my small apartment contemplating how best to share my views on this book. It is a quarter to eleven and the temperature is soaring towards a steady 28 degrees Celcius.I am drinking my first cup of tea and probably the last if the temperatures spike.Reading, Life, is getting an intimate/ personal account of Gao Jialin’s life from his struggles with belonging, earning societal approval, working and most of all pursuing his dreams without the interference of any corrupt people. He exhibits bouts of anger just as he does those of joy and it makes this quite an interesting read.I love how the story begins with precision “On the tenth day of the sixth month of the lunar calendar…”There were instances where I felt that the author dwelled too much on what was going on inside Gao’s head and wished that we’d have more on those around him, to better understand his frustration and their expectations of him.However, this story will be memorable because we all struggle with fulfilling our desires and ambitions and when you read about someone who isn’t willing to back down then it leaves a mark, albeit a good one.I got to read this book courtesy of Netgalley. I am fairly knowledgeable about Chinese history, having taught Chinese art for many years, but I think this book could be appreciated by anyone with any level of knowledge about Chinese history. It isn't a quick read, but it isn't meant to be. Think Pearl Buck's Good Earth without the orientalist problems.The story is a sort of classic one, country mouse, in this case, a young man, in the big city. But, the text is so incredibly beautiful. I was honestly surprised. Books in translation, particularly those that rely on the cadence and music of another language, can lose something in another language. I don't read Chinese, so I can't compare this to the original. But, I definitely think this is worth a read.I hope schools use this book instead of Pearl Buck or other stories about China written by a white author.Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

"Life" is a great, quick read for people looking to have a foray with Chinese Literature. The general tone of the book overall feels similar to other books that I have read from China. It reminded me quite a bit of some of Yu Hua's books such as "To Live" or "Chronicles of a Blood Merchant." It has an honest voice, which idolizes hard work and country life, but it didn't have the humor that is also present in Yu Hua's books. It has a lot of the general themes of Chinese literature too such as overbearing parents, class struggle, manual labor, and nepotism. It's quite similar to other novels written in the 20th century. I am very happy that this book was translated though because I hope that it means that Lu Yao's other book "Ordinary World" also gets translated. I currently live in China and "Ordinary World" is my best friend's favorite book and I would love to read it. "Life" was good, it just was similar to other books that I had read before. If you're a fan of the class struggle in provincial China genre, you will greatly enjoy this novel.

Life by Lu Yao is a novel about the struggle to move from one societal class to another. It is filled with lyrical prose that describes the scenery of rural China with such sweetness that you can feel the soil running through your fingers.The characters are just as beautifully described, and it is easy to find yourself swept away into the time and place that was rural 1980’s China. I fell in love with Qiaozhen. She was the true heroine and someone I admired deeply for her loyalty to both her land and her people.It tackles many universal themes: financial and spiritual desire, what it means to be successful in work and in relationships, love of country and people, betrayal, societal expectations, economic hardships – many themes that we all struggle with every single day.There were moments I found it quite difficult to read, but it was so worth persevering.#netgalley #life #LuYao
