Well, this book looked like it would be a great dot-to-dot book with a more advanced level of detail than most but when I opened it up I was rather shocked at how small the dots and the numbers are. They are so small that the dots are about 1/4 the size of a .05mm pencil lead. And not only is the ink extremely light, the ink color changes with every 100 dots which I found very distracting. The designs in this book are of an abstract style which further adds to the confusion. The criss-crossing of the lines back and forth on top of each other are very confusing. I worked two of the puzzles and wasn't interested in doing any more because of my inability to see the dots/numbers. Not only did I have to have glasses, I had to have a magnifier as well to be able to see the numbers. I have included several photos demonstrating the size of the print and the two puzzles I completed to illustrate the confusing abstract design. All in all, this book wasn't really for me. Someone who is very near-sighted would probably enjoy this book more than I could.

I would have given it a full five stars, but on at least 3 (that I've gotten to--there may be more), there are a few image/dots that didn't print on the edge...like it was too big and lines/dots outside of the edge just weren't there. It's only about 6-7 dots on each of them, but it's enough to throw me off a bit and knock off a star.Aside from the printing snafu, I like it a lot. The pages are nice and thick, and the color of the dots changes every 100 dots, making it easier to keep your place. Some of the comments complain that the numbers are too small--they really are small, but the pages are large and the author does a great job of making all 1000+ dots viewable.Don't expect an up-close viewing to be overly pretty--the dots are organized so that you end up with a picture that looks like it's been sketched. Not bad, but (as the description says), much better a little further away. It is pretty fun to see what seem to be odd scribbles turn into a cool image.

i have purchased all 5 of this series and find them to be fun and fullfiling as a pastime to while away the lazy afternoons of retirement. hey if you can't see the dots, use a magnifying glass. i started with this book. did not get the full secret trick about these till i did the warhol picture. now if i remember about 6 or7 of the different series and numbers all converged in the chin area. thats when i saw that when done properly drawing a line between numbers will not obscure any numbers you will need for later. you could have seen the light go on over my head.now the other thing i discovered is a ruler when you dot to dot glasses or a building, but free hand for faces animals and most lines under two inches. it's not like we are being graded on this perusal. this is a fun thing to do. easy on the body and you can keep the television off and show your grandkids a hobby that does not need thumbs and a screen to stare at.

This dot to dot book is VERY challenging!!! I finally finished my first one but it took me forever. The numbers are very tricky....because u never know where the next number might turn out. I am nearsighted and can see really well up close even though I am over 60 years old. I finally had to use a magnifying glass and when your numbers get higher and higher, you can lose your place so easily when you look for the next number. Also it helps to use a mechanical penci with .09 lead and have ordered a Tombow pencil eraser to erase with! I had so many smudges with a regular pencil. This book is my new hobby now and I love it!

this kind of dot to dot makes you work harder but I enjoy the challenge. It is amazing how all of that drawing back and forth in such crazy ways can actually capture the intended picture and they seem to come alive.....I do have to use a flashlight because the numbers are way too small. It takes a little longer to work a page but I get tickled when I can see it coming together.

This dot-to-dot is a lot of fun and the designs are very detailed and intricate. The icons are great and we love to guess who it is the further the drawing gets. My only drawback is the numbers are extremely small and some of the colors are harder to see than others. Other than those two things, these series are highly recommended if you enjoy passing the time by connecting the dots. These puzzles are a little bit harder on the dot-to-dot spectrum if you like a challenge!!

It was easier to find the numbers than I thought it would be because each set of a hundred numbers has a different color (200s red, 300s green), that helped a lot. It is easy to just zone out and relax- it takes just enough concentration that my brain is occupied but not so much that I start to get anxious. The big sturdy pages are nice. The only reason that it is not 5 stars is that the pictures (even when you are being really careful with your lines) aren't exactly masterworks.

I'm always looking for coloring and other activity books for "adults" so was thrilled to find this! Each picture probably takes a leisurely hour to complete, and in many ways connecting the dots is much more relaxing than coloring because there are no choices to make! The results are pretty cool -- all of the designs are really great you will be pretty pleased with the results. Thinking of making a cheeky gallery wall using my favorite completed portraits from this book.

Therefore, many of these translations, even those recently translated, employ archaic Victorian English flourishes. You know, you’ve seen them. These translations use manners of speech such as “O, Arjuna,” “O King of Bharatas,” and use “thee,” “thou.” These literary devices ruin the reading experience because this is just not how people speak, and it gets in the way of appreciating the beauty of this poem.Ms. Patton, on the other hand, uses none of these anachronisms in her translation. The Bhagavad Gita is poetry, and Patton is a published poet, and thus she knows how to craft a simple phrase in simple, elegant language for maximum effect.Old School translations also display a lack of understanding on the message of the Gita. Reading the Gita is such a compelling experience because the message is so simple. Patton’s translation here is remarkable because it so accurately reflects the divine simplicity of the language used in its message.Ms Patton has provided an excellent introduction, with bibliography and her translation sparingly provide footnotes.“Bhagavad Gita” means “Song of God.” Ms. Patton’s translation is indeed the “Song of God.”

Five stars does not do this book justice. It is a singularly beautiful story and one of the world's most important works of philosophy and spirituality. But more than that, in this edition the author manages to achieve the nearly impossible; Patton translates the original poem into English verse that is remarkable fluid, readable, and graceful.If you have any curiosity about the world or any interest in the fundamental nature of humanity, read this.

This is the only translation of The Bhagavad Gita that I've read, so as a translation I have nothing to compare it to. I can say that it was an easy read, and I was able to finish it in one sitting. As a work of literature, the translation was smooth and poetic, and I really enjoyed reading it. I really couldn't put it down. As a religious/spiritual work, I found it to be very enlightening, and it touched on many aspects of one's spiritual and daily life. I'm glad that I read it, and I think that any spiritual person regardless of their religion will find it useful. I only took one star away, because of my own ignorance. Since, this is the only translation that I've read, I don't know if there is a better version out there.- GB

To me this seems like a great translation of a book that's regarded by many to be holy scripture. Krishna's divine point of view sheds light on and puts this in perspective. This one is worth reading again and again.

I own two copies of the Bhagavad Gita. I enjoy this one more. I enjoy it more because of the intoduction which is basically college lecture or essay. You do not have to read the introduction to enjoy this book (as I enjoy my other copy which has no introduction) but, it adds to the reading of it by adding context and a clearer explanation of this translation.

I have read numerous translations, and none have the beauty, fullness, and informative extolling of virtue for living expressed more artistically.

Juan Mascaro's translation remains simply the best.The English is clear, the words are considered, and the balance of the sentences is simply marvellous.It reminds one of the simple, balanced writing of the King James Bible. My feeling is that the way Mascaro writes English is strongly influenced by his Catalan heritage, yet the exactitude of his prose reflects his long association with Cambridge.In my opinion, comparing several other translations, Mascaro's translation delivers what is most important-- the spirit of the message in simple, clear english.Jacques Joubert

This installment of the Dave Robicheaux series starts in the Katrina/Rita damage. It feels like the author witnessed the area firsthand and you can feel his sense of tragedy and the level of destruction (he likely was there at the time). I have enjoyed all of James Lee Burke's books. This one is not one of the best (Black Cherry Blues, for me), but is still just really good reading for me. The "bad guys" are not as creepy as other books, but really the villain in this one was the weather and the destruction wrought by the hurricanes. The people were almost supporting cast. It was recommended to me to read these in time sequence, which I have mostly been doing. I will finish the whole series. I do not completely agree with some critics who say that Burke's books become formulaic and predictable. They are an extension of him. His command of the English language is remarkable and I will eventually read every book he has written!

Southern Lousiana cannot be depicted in a book by someone who visited there once. James Lee Burke provides one of the most satisfying glimpses into a unique culture, dark practices, strange and unpronouceable foods, stirring music, a world dripping with booze, twisted by crime, and inhabited by impoverished people who live in the clutches of a culture that has produced mardigras, boudin, etoufee, and zydeco.Voodoo, drugs, sex, gambling, and names for common fish that no one has ever heard before; those things make up Southern Louisiana. But it's more than a culture that comprises races of such wonderous mix that music, food, jazz funerals, and the like are mere products of the creative minds of a myriad carefree souls.I applaud Burke for realizing that the story of Lousians is not a linear telling of history and present practices, or a before and after Katrina comparison, or painting a bleak picture of a subordinated people. No say me, it is a song sung by sea birds, to the rhythm of falling rain and storm winds, to the beat of large fish jumping for bugs and falling back into the water, and listened to by the ears of the soul amid the aroma of fried fish, boiling crabs, crawfish, and blood sausage.If you want to hear the song and experience one of the most descriptive and colorful literary journeys of your life, read not only this one, but all of Burke's novels. There are many people to hate, those that turn your stomach, those that you'd like to twist thir heads off, and those that you can't hate no matter how hard you try.One more thing. Not many authors can crawl inside the heads of sychopaths, an alcaholic, a Viet Nam Vet that has seen too much, a killer, rapist, a torturor, an ex-cop, and an impulsive partner that seems out of control. Burke lets it all hang out with these personas; and he does it like a pro or lay psychiatrist.You must read this book, let the language become an intregal part of the backdrop and get past it, be prepared to stay up late, and have great fun in the process.

This has to be my favorite in the Robicheaux series by far. It has depth, a paralyzing taste of reality and the best villain yet! Ronald Bledsoe will not be forgotten easily. Beyond Dave, Molly, Alafair and Clete, even the sub-plots with Bertrand Melancon and Otis Baylor carry their own pathos and intrigue. This is one of the very best!

With Dave Robicheaux telling the story you can actually feel , see and smell Louisiana . You see everything through his eyes and his heart . Clete Purcell is an open wound that never heals . The love between the two friends keep both their wounds closed. Molly and Alafair make you part of their family . Every character becomes alive . You see how they live and good or bad , you understand them through Dave , especially through his heart and integrity ..But as Clete would say , it's only rock and roll .

Books about the Deep South are some of my most favorite to read--the heat and humidity always seem to just seep right through the pages with their passion and longing and this book is no exception.Dave Robicheaux is a Louisiana police detective trying to sort out a murder, a burglary and a variety of other crimes that are somehow connected. As Dave is trying to sort through the mess, evil comes into his own home and threatens his best friend, bail bondsman Clete, and adopted daughter. This book was the 17th in the series but I really didn't feel like I was missing anything.The book is set during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. While I have read many books about this disaster as a focus or even setting, none made the horror of the crime spree aftermath so very real. The description of the destruction of New Orleans is what struck me most strongly about this book. It seemed to read like a tragedy, almost an ode, to a grand, beautiful lady whose prime time had somehow been robbed of her before her time. It was a police/procedural mystery that felt as if I were riding right along in Dave's cruiser. It's so realistic and gritty you can feel the sand and dirt swirling around in your brain. The mystery is full of sharp twists and turns and while sometimes these books are too technical for me, this one fit just right.And, just when you think you know who did it, you find out you didn't even know what 'it' is!I always love to discover a new author and a new detective to fall for--Dave Robicheaux is now on my "Most Wanted List"--I suppose I've have to go back and read all 16 before and the others since! A small price to pay for a great read.

Bottom Line: In the Bully Pulpit, Professor Doris Goodwin has written a bloated but worthy read. Using the lives and presidencies of Theodore Roosevelt and Howard Taft as the center; she combines shorter biographies and a partial history of the Progressive movement in Republican politics. A second major theme is a biography of Samuel McClure, his magazine, the people he lead and how together they created the golden age of journalism. There is a lot of book, a lot to discuss and Prof. Goodwin needed a better editor in getting it into one volume. The Bully Pulpit is recommended, but are cautioned that this is a longer book than needed.New to me was that President Teddy Roosevelt had invented the term ‘Bully Pulpit”. His use of the slang word ‘Bully’ indicated that something was good, grander than a more modern person might say “Nifty”. To Roosevelt the Bully Pulpit was a very good place to be heard and thereby command public attention. He also coined the word ‘Muckraker’. From the beginning a harsh term to suggest that a journalist so employed was shoveling farm yard waste, to create scandal and distrust where it was not justifiable.Prof. Goodwin’s purpose is to compare how effectively President Roosevelt combined his use of the bully pulpit with his openness to certain of the muckrakers, specifically the McClure’s stable of investigative reporters. She contrasts this with President Taft’s more limited use of the bully pulpit and more traditional use of political discourse to forward their common cause: the Republican Progressive movement. The difference would be one of degree rather than absolute. Each would have to take some causes directly to the people and each would have to make some compromises. Indeed there is an unanswered question suggested by Roosevelt, that Taft had compromised too much.Had this book been focused more on this topic, it would have been a better book. Instead Professor Good win gives us a detailed biography of the two men, much of it available in purpose built biographies. The extensive backgrounds on the team behind McClure, particularly Ida Tarbell, Lincoln Steffens and William Allen White was interesting if over much. Roosevelt promoted close relationships with his favored journalists. Another example of how TR was a man of the future and is germane to the author’s larger questions.Goodwin’s certainly dares greatly. She does achieve her goals. She asks us to strive through too many pages.

The concept of this book is basically to present simultaneously (a) a biography of T.R.; (b) a biography of William Howard Taft; and (c) a general non-fiction book (like Simon Winchester might do) about McClure's magazine; and in fact (d) mini-bios of several McClure's writers. That seems both very audacious in scope, and difficult as far as tying all that together in a cohesive manner. Improbably, Goodwin makes it work brilliantly. Probably the key ingredient is her exposition of the access and relationships that the McClure's writers had to T.R., and the synergy thus created; plus contrasting how things changed under Taft.The book is extremely long, so if you're short of attention span, consider that. I prefer richly detailed narrative (as long as it's not aimless or wandering) rather than glossing over things to shorten a book up, so the fact that this took me 6 weeks to read was no problem for me. (It is exhaustively end-noted, by the way, for those interested. When you finish the book's main pages, you will be only at 56% through on the Kindle's progress meter.) Like many readers, I have previously read a T.R. biography or two, but I did not find this book repetitive or redundant to those, given its angle on T.R.'s career and given all the Taft and McClure's content. Really a master work, and a great read that lets you lose yourself in the turn-of-the-century era for quite awhile.

It's too long, repetitive and redundant. It's a shame because there is a lot of great material but you have to wade through an overwhelming amount of minutiae along the way. The book is definitely at its best in the first 200 pages of so when it deals with the early lives of Taft and Roosevelt. It falls into repetitive, drawn-out mode once Taft and Roosevelt begin their political ascents.Once the two men are in their prime, the book repeatedly follows the same lifeless, mechanical pattern to convey events. Goodwin will briefly summarize something of note that Roosevelt or Taft did, and then recite what everyone else in the world said about it. For example: (a) Roosevelt made a campaign speech; (b) here's what Roosevelt wrote about the speech in his diary; (b) and here's what Edith wrote about the speech in a letter to her sister; (c) and here's what Taft wrote about the speech in a note to Roosevelt; (d) and here's what Ida Tarbell wrote about the speech in a letter to McClure; (d) and here's what newspaper 1 wrote about the speech; (e) and here's what newspaper 2 wrote about the speech..... (z) here's what newspaper 12 wrote about the speech.This goes on and on and on for nearly every public achievement of Roosevelt, Taft and a half dozen muckrakers. It gets old and very boring.Also, it's odd that Goodwin gives almost no commentary herself on what made certain achievements or events special. She doesn't bring a historian's perspective to the material, she just recites what happened and quotes the remarks of all the players ad nauseum. The only exception is in those early chapters about young Roosevelt and Taft, in which she does read between the lines here and there when dissecting letters and diary entries.I finished the book on principle, I made it all the way to page 750. But I resented it and nearly quit several times because, hey, there are other books to read and at some point you have to get on with your life. I've never read Team of Rivals, but I'll be taking that off my "Books to Read" list as a result of this experience.

Indeed, we can already feel planetary forces working through us to determine that wisdom be wrought from the rugged experience of feeling.'This book is a must for everyone, not only those who want to move on from a merely sentimental use of their heart.Bravo Stewart Pearce. He has done it again!

This is not an extra-ordinary book. The author continues the orientation he first presented in The Alchemy of Voice: Transform and Enrich Your Life Through the Power of Your Voice and focuses instead on the heart.In my own words the heart is like a great mountain in terms of the vastness of knowing it. It cannot be known through conquest as it is like a gentle rose and sensitive, and apt to close if approached too swiftly. So in this book you do get some nice words and some helpful meditations to help you get to know your heart. However, I don't see much in this book that is beyond that standard fare of new age thinking such as the works of Elizabeth Claire Prophet who's Violet Flame To Heal Body, Mind And Soul (Pocket Guide to Practical Spirituality) may actually be a better book for folks new to tuning inward.Now I am cautious about this books admiration for the Knights Templar. There are some not so nice things they are suspected of. And I must say that as much as I admire Grail lore, it is quite a distraction to look for something like the Grail when it is interpreted as an object, something outside of you. And I'd even say that the 'Grail' of the quest is not the heart itself, but the fully integrated human who is in touch with the divine breath. So the Templar here are somewhat distracting and the authors approach to incorporate them is a bit of a stretch. Part of this use of the Templar is for their purported Honor Code and the twelve graces. The explanation of these graces (archetypes) is a bit lacking. If you were interesting in imprinting yourself with some divine archetypes like this a most excellent book is Seeds of Transformation: A 52-Step Journey Towards Enlightenment.The deeper approaches to the heart are known by the mystics. And I did not feel that there was a mystic lineage, beyond quotes from Rumi, that was really informing or backing up this book. Of the mystics who know the heart it is the Sufi's, of whom Rumi was one, who can speak volumes of meaning from the heart. But I did not sense the mystical voice of the heart very much in this book.Yes, so the conclusion I reached is that I could not find what made the authors contribution to the field of the heart and self-help unique or why this book would be special above it's peers. The authors background is in voice. And to make the leap into mysticism requires a lot of time and being rooted in some lineage which is mystical itself. And if you are writing a book on mystical self-cultivation you do NOT give people facts like listing Faith, Courage, etc. You orient people to find their truth within by giving practices to discover their inner truth themselves. Many of the meditations are pages long and will not benefit someone trying to tune in have having to keep winking at the pages in the book.To have been more powerful the content that starts on page 87 'Core tools for for the Heart's note' should have been the beginning and start of the book. That section of the writing is much clearer than the self-help porridge preceding it. The power tools, minus the case studies in them, are pretty helpful to someone new on the spiritual path. (Just keep in mind that in metaphysics not all rules necessarily apply all the time.)This book could have focused on those qualities that attract the heart in order that you focus on those qualities to strengthen, purify, and tune into your heart. From reading this book you might think that the Templar 12 graces are the key. They are not (IMHO). What attracts us, the core of us, our heart, is in three words in Sufi mystic Hazrat Inayat Khan most famous prayer. Those words are love, harmony, and beauty. It is indeed love, harmony, and beauty and their appreciation by us that are the core values that make us human beings. Quoting Blake is one thing. But weaving in the qualities of love, harmony, and beauty, are really what would sound the heart's note.(I not would have included in the book a meditation named 'Heaven's Gate Meditation' due to the titles assocation with Marshall Applewhite and his 'Heavens Gate' cult but maybe that will only ring bells in Americans minds.)If you want to work with heart energy, especially from the view of mysticism, then you may want to instead read The Heart of Sufism. That would give you a very wide survey of Sufi insights into the soul, the heart, etc.If you are specifically wanting to work with heart energy as the primary focus then there is another book by another Sufi that would serve you very well. That is Living from the Heart: Heart Rhythm Meditation for Energy, Clarity, Peace, Joy, and Inner Power.

A wonderful guide to living our truth at all times, how to find our path together with tools on how to stay on it.Having read the first book THE ALCHEMY OF VOICE and attended Stewart's workshops, reading this was a no-brainer for me.This book in particular offers quick powerful practices with references to inspiring poems, quotes and stories that bring me back into my essential nature, my Heart's note.Enjoy!

This excellent book is a must buy for any medical social worker. It is easy to read with relevant examples and case studies throughout the book. The information is very accessible and could be used by any social worker in the healthcare field or by other clinicians hoping to gain skills in the key aspects of palliative care. It is rare that I read a book beginning to end, but this one can be read fully or used as a handbook. I will use it in teaching as well as a personal resource for my clinical work.
