Julian Fellowes has crafted a wonderful book of the scripts from Season One of the hit show. This includes whole scenes and huge amounts of dialogue that were not filmed or were cut. (These portions are unobtrusively indicated by a bar to the left side of the script.) While some of it may not have been strictly necessary for the show, it's all of great interest to read and expands our knowledge of the characters, their back-stories and the goings-on at the manor. But the best part of the book are the extensive notes, remarks and comments by Lord Fellowes. I learned a lot about English country life and other matters, and it is fascinating to become privy to the creative process of this gifted and entertaining writer. I hope the later seasons are similarly published. Yes, I loved watching the series very much, but I promise you that this fine volume will extend your enjoyment in many directions. A surpassingly fine entertainment!
I purchased this book on pre-order after my Downton binge after watching the finale of Season 3 (UK time). I was elated when it finally arrived and dove into it almost immediate because I needed a Downton Fix. Yes, I realize how silly I sound. This script hit the spot and even exceeded my expectations.I love the way this script is formatted, it runs alongside the series and if scenes were moved around, they are moved around in the script as well so you aren't confused. There are extra scenes included and are easily spotted by a small sidebar alongside it. In addition, there are comments about certain scenes through the book as well as a backstories behind the history of the times and why they did what, even confession a few mistakes they made. There are a few plots that become a bit clearer, including the one that befuddled me the most - what exactly DID Pamuk and Mary do? That answer was worth the book cost alone! Maybe I'm just stupid but I was always wondering how far they went and that is all answered here. Well, I think. LOLDefinitely pick this book up if you are a fan of Downton Abbey. Now if only Season 2's script wasn't SO far off in the distance!
I was so excited to see that this book had come out. I love the series and was looking forward to reading the scripts. These are the expanded versions - so there are some added extra scenes and dialogue. There is also some great commentary by the writer that explains certain scenes, character decisions, and historical facts. It also describes the scenes and characters. It is really fun to see what the original thought was behind the episodes that I love so much. I got the kindle version and it is great. I can't wait for the other 2 seasons to come out. I would recommend this to anyone who loves the show. It is also a great way to ease the withdrawl symptoms one has as they finish up a season and have to wait for the next one to come on!!
Has many deleted scenes and lots of background notes from Julian Fellowes on character back story, why things were done the way they were both for writing progression reasons, and because of historical accuracy (lots of asides about how households ran in those days). I re-watched the series on Amazon Prime and read along the footnotes with it (as if it were a sort of visual DVD commentary). It made me notice lots of little things in the background I hadn't noticed before (i.e., how Carson will never serve anyone during the breakfast buffet, or what did Mr. Pamuk actually mean when he said that Mary would still be able to appear untouched for her wedding - turns out there was a deleted line!). If you like Downton Abbey or find history trivia fun then I highly recommend this series of three script books.
This book--the first of what will hopefully become a six-season series--is a must-have for all of us who are enduring Downton Abbey withdrawal. That said, it's appeal should be broader than that. All the shooting scripts from Season One are given here in unedited form, with indications where dialogue or scenes were cut in the interests of time or other production considerations. But the real value of this collection are Julian Fellowes' own very fulsome, prolific and engaging comments on nearly every scene, He gives us the creative thinking behind many of the character trait and plot twists, details on production resources and limitations, the struggles and uncertainties of the first season, before anyone knew what a phenomenal hit the show would be. Fellowes shares wonderful anecdotes from his own growing-up and tales heard from his own family members--incidents that found their way into the show. He offers a great deal of historical background, both on national and international events that are mentioned on the show and on the minutia of the way of life he set out to portray, and the attitudes and assumptions--the "why" of the aristocratic life as well as the "what."Downton Abbey fans will watch the Season I DVD with sharper eyes and enhanced awareness. Students of TV production, direction and writing will love this book too, for it's insights into the profession. I devoutly hope Fellowes intends to publish all six seasons of scripts and his comments.
